The game against Australia was David Villa's last international game.

David Villa played his last game with his national team against Australia, in a game that was irrelevant for the 2014 World Cup. With 97 caps and 59 goals, the Spanish striker will no longer be playing for la Furia Roja.

During his last game, Villa scored a beautiful back-heel goal and became the highest scoring player for Spain, which begs the question: why did Del Bosque play him in an irrelevant game against Australia?

The 32-year-old made an impact right away. Granted, el Guaje was not facing the best of defenders, but he still managed to score in great style, which Diego Costa has yet to do for Spain.

Villa exploded with the Spanish national team during the 2008 Euros, despite being out of the final for a thigh injury. Former Atletico Madrid and Barcelona striker, became legendary during the 2010 World Cup. Despite Torres’ injury, Melbourne City’s forward played an incredible tournament, leading Spain to their first ever World Cup.

With over 140 goals in all competitions, David Villa represents one of the best forwards of all time. El Guaje played in almost all offensive positions; covering both wings with Sporting Gijon, playing as a true number 9 with Zaragoza, delivering as a falso nueve with Barcelona and even taking on center-attacking midfielder duties with Valencia.

Villa’s career is not over yet, and the Spanish wonder-striker will keep us entertained with Melbourne City and New York City FC, where surely he will deliver more great goals.
