A Group D match will feature Uruguay and Costa Rica as the two nations go head to head at the Estádio Castelão on Saturday, the 14th of June 2014.

Uruguay fans have been anxiously waiting for positive news on the injury front as far as talismanic forward Luis Suarez is concerned. The 27 year old had a blistering campaign with Liverpool which saw him score 31 goals in just 33 appearances.

The Liverpool man was all set to lead his national side to a successful World Cup campaign but a knee injury has hindered his chances of making it to the starting lineup for Uruguay’s opening fixture against Costa Rica. However following his surgery Suarez has gone through an accelerated fitness program comprising of three training sessions per day. His efforts might eventually pay off with the 27 year old set to make an appearance in the match against England. Suarez himself was upbeat and expressed his delight on the progress he has made so far.

"The knee is getting better," he said. "I feel very good. I have to go day by day but everything is going the right way."

His teammate Cristian Rodriguez who plays his trade at Spanish side Atletico Madrid was also hopeful that Suarez’s hard work will pay off and he will be back in the squad soon enough.

"He is very focused. He is working in double and triple shifts and we hope to have him with us soon."

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez on the other hand is unsure of when his star player would be able to make a return but expressed his desperation to have the Liverpool star back in the starting lineup as early as possible.

"We have no set deadlines,"he said. "I don't know if we'll have him for the first match, for the second, for the third. If it were up to me, Suárez would play tomorrow."

Uruguay come into this match full of confidence at the back of two consecutive victories. Their last match against Slovenia ended in a 2-0 victory for La Celeste with goals from Cavani and Stuani. Apart from having won both the recent friendly matches they have played, the confidence in the Uruguayan camp is expected to be sky high with Los Charrúas having won the Copa América last time out.

Uruguay will be hoping for a repeat of their dream run four years back when the World Cup was held in South Africa. The South American side made it to the semi-final of the tournament and was eventually knocked out by Netherlands. With a fit and running Luis Suarez, Uruguay will be better equipped to do better this time around.

Costa Rica is on paper the weakest side in a group which has been termed the group of death. La Sele have not fared well in the pre-world cup friendlies and will need to put forth much improved performances if they are to get anything out of the current World Cup campaign.

Costa Rica were unimpressive in their last outing against Northern Ireland when a 64th minute equalizer from Celso Borges salvaged a draw for Jorge Luis Pinto’s side. While in their other outing against Japan, Costa Rica were thrashed 3-1 by the Asian side.

Uruguay have an advantage over their counterparts as far as the head to head is concerned. Of the eight matches played between the two sides La Celeste  have won six, while the remaining two ended in draws. 23 goals have been scored in the eight matches between the two sides, with Uruguay having scored 15 of those.
