Argentina are looking fiery. Beside captain Lionel Messi, they also possess Angel di Maria. He features on LiveSoccerTV’s list of the Top 20 players to watch at the 2014 World Cup.

On February 14, 1988 in Rosario, Angel di Maria was born. He grew up to play at Rosario Central between 2005 and 2007 before making a move to Europe, joining Portuguese giants Benfica. He was set to replace departing skipper, Simao Sabrosa. His energy on the wings quickly saw him become a fan favourite.

In summer 2010, however, Di Maria moved to Real Madrid. His spot in the squad was massively threatened with the arrival of Isco and Gareth Bale last summer. He was linked to Arsenal during the January 2014 transfer window, but after expressing his concern and winning the faith of coach Carlo Ancelotti, Angel di Maria was given a considerable amount of playing time.

He made good use of it, with 11 goals and 26 assists in 52 appearances. His performances helped Real Madrid clinch the Copa del Rey and the long-awaited tenth European Cup. The Argentine won the Man of the Match award in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League final.

Angel Di Maria is perhaps one of world football’s most underrated players. It was his goal that made the difference between runners-up Nigeria and conquerors Argentina in the final of Men’s Football Tournament at the 2008 Olympics.

Di Maria carries jersey number 22 at Real Madrid and jersey number 7 with the Albiceleste.
