USA vs Italy Match Preview

Angela Asante, Jun 10th 2009
For the second time in a space of three years, Italy and the USA will clash against each other in a major tournament.

Italy and the USA battling it out in Germany 2006

They last affronted themselves in the group stages of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. That battle proved to be very ugly, with flashes of yellow and red cards, reckless fouls, bloody injuries, and controversial referee decisions all being part of it.

People will remember how Cristian Zaccardo’s 27th minute own goal gifted an equalizer to the USA who didn’t have a single shot on target throughout the whole game.

Now the Azzuri are determined to get the better of the Yankees in South Africa when they clash on June 15...

Marcelo Lippi’s Italy ready for the Confederations Cup

One may question the importance of the Confederations Cup tournament as a major event. However, Italy’s World Cup winning coach Marcelo Lippi believes that this competition could steer them all the way to World Cup glory once again.

“The top football nations like Germany, Brazil, and Holland never take part in a top tournament just to look good. They always try to win. We will use the next 20 days to better ourselves and if things go well, win the trophy."

Former world best goalkeeper of the year, Gianluigi Buffon, also expressed Italy’s desire to triumph in this mini-tournament.

"We will be playing some of the strongest teams in the world,”

"This competition is not like the World Cup or the Euros in terms of value, but we want to do well and we will aim to win."

Italy will have to avoid complacency or underestimation towards the USA. Bob Bradley’s men have proven that they can cause upsets and be unstoppable.

Bob Bradley’s view on the Confederations Cup

The United States of America are yet to impose themselves as a footballing nation around the world, but Coach Bob Bradley believes that the Confederations Cup tournament is the perfect rehearsal before the biggest competition which is the World Cup in South Africa.

"I think we all recognize that the spotlight will be much brighter next year. But in that regard, maybe it's part of what makes it a great opportunity,"

“You're playing against top teams, and yet you're doing it at a time when maybe there's a little less focus and it gives you a chance to size up a lot of things."

The United States bounced back from their 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica with a 2-1 comeback against Honduras in their last match before their game against Italy.
