The Three Lions are on their best qualification campaign track ever in their history of football, sharing a 100% record so far like European Champions Spain.
They resume their road to South Africa 2010 on April 1, with a home game against Ukraine. Capello’s men are strong favorites going into the encounter. With names like Lampard and Gerrard, the England squad possesses a big advantage over Ukraine on paper.
Coach Fabio Capello has an array of talent from which to choose from. Rising stars like Aston Villa’s duo Gabriel Agbonlahor and Ashley Young add to England’s already-rich list of players.
The Italian manager has given the go-ahead to other players from the Premiership to prove themselves and have a call-up in the national team. While The Three Lions are currently enjoying a good run under Capello, new names like Gareth Barry have also been included and invited to mature themselves for the future of the England squad.
The story is different though for Chelsea’s number 10 Joe Cole. The midfielder has been sidelined for the rest of the season with an injury and might only take part in his country’s qualification campaign when it reaches its half-way point.
On the contrary, Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney seems to have hit the finest form in his career so far, netting 5 good goals to equal David Villa’s tally in the top scorers chart.
But in all, the English squad still looks to be in a transition phase with Capello constantly revealing that not even 50% of the places in the squad have been cemented by their specific numbers respectively.
One player who is fighting to be a permanent figure under the Italian maestro is AC Milan’s David Beckham.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United midfielder is anxious to be part of the England squad that might reach South Africa come the finals of the World Cup in 2010. The 33 year old knows how important it means for him to keep playing his football in Europe.
“Everyone knows how passionate I am about playing for my country and if this gives me a better chance of being involved in that squad that's great,” Beckham revealed when talking about extending his contract with Milan.
Beckham never managed to lead his country to glory in the whole of his career. Perhaps he might try out his chances when England reaches the promise land in South Africa in one year’s time.
At the moment Capello, whose aim is to bring the World Cup trophy back in England since 1966, will prefer to think game by game and go step by step.
