The Soca Warriors resume qualification for the World Cup on March 28 with a game at home to Honduras at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Trinidad & Tobago have a wonderful Caribbean Cup record with 8 trophies out of 13 in their name which has just declined in recent years. But qualification to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany brought the fever back on this tiny archipelagic state. The Soca Warriors had defeated the curse that was on them since 1966 when they were invited for the first time to participate in the qualification stages for the finals. T&T will be keen to repeat what they were able to do three years ago and get the carnival started in the entire country by ensuring at least a third place finish in CONCACAF’s group zone.
Having given away a 2-0 lead in the dying minutes of the game against El Salvador in their last qualifier this year, Trinidad & Tobago will try and correct themselves and get things right this time round when they resume their qualification campaign on March 28 against Honduras.
On paper, Los Catrachos are arguably the better side going into the encounter. However, a 2-0 defeat against Costa Rica, which left them at the bottom of the table with Mexico, could appear as a negative sign that things might just go worse for them after suffering from a bad start.
Honduras may well set their hopes on bouncing back from this defeat with a positive result against The Soca Warriors. But this wish could be less simple to realize than one may think.
If Los Catrachos can boast about Star men like Spur’s Wilson Palacios and Benefica’s David Suazo, Trinidad & Tobago may also rely on the Black Cats’ influential in-form striker Kenwyne Jones.
The Sunderland forward is yet to affirm his impact in Trinidad & Tobago’s national soccer team with only 4 goals in as much as 36 appearances for the club. But he might shine at the right time when his country resumes its road to South Africa 2010.
