France vs USA Match Preview

Angela Asante, Jul 13th 2011
France vs USA is the match of the day! The United States are aiming to win the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but will the French destroy the Americans’ dream?
Hope Solo could once again star for the USA in their semi-final match against France.
Hope Solo could once again star for the USA in their semi-final match against France.
It’s huge. It’s captivating. It’s going to be a 90 or 120 minutes battle full of thrills and skills. And the events of this match will create a final picture—with the players of one team all smiles in ecstasy and the players of the other team completely confused in disgust and anguish.

USA are relishing the fact of being tagged as hot favorites. They indeed are, and deservedly so. Don’t mess up with Abby Wambach, Rapinoe, Hope Solo or any of the United States’ women’s football team.

Brazil’s number 1 goalkeeper Andreia could tell you best how it feels to be stunned by a last-second header from Wambach in a knock-out stage match. Team mate and defender Daiane could explain better what it means to score an own goal and have a penalty kick saved by Hope Solo under the influence of stress.

Meanwhile, the Canarinhas’ strong midfield may approve the deadly factor of Rapinoe who fed Wambach’s goal with a killer long cross. USA proved that belief is the source of success in the quarter-finals against the Brazilian. However, it’s not time for them to seat back.

The Americans’ haven’t finish their job in Germany yet. Solo is absolutely aware of the importance of Wednesday’s Women’s World Cup semi-final game against France. The quality goalkeeper told FIFA.com in the build-up to the match:

“I feel like our country is behind us, and that now the whole world is watching us, because people realize we’ve been playing some really good football.”

USA lost their last Women’s World Cup semi-final match. Back in China 2007, the United States suffered a miserable 4-0 defeat in the hands of eventual beaten finalists Brazil. But Solo is hoping for experience to defeat a prospective repeat of history.

“What happened in 2007 is now in the past, and I don’t want to go through that again,” she said.

But the French also want to record another victory on Wednesday. Les Bleues have made the most shots at the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It must be noted that 32 of their 80 shots have been on target so it could be normal for anyone to expect a busy afternoon for Hope Solo. Which players will flop and who will score the match’s decisive goal should the battle be a tight one?

France vs USA Match Report

USA have reached, in great style and at the public's expectations, the final of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup!

An early goal from Cheney gave the Americans some much needed confidence which seemed to transform into complacency at some point. In reply to the United States’ 1-0 lead, the brave French women refused to give up and dominated the USA for the most part of the first period.

Necib’s energy down the left wing gave a lot of problems to the Americans’ defense as Wambach seemed to have disappeared for a while. Not that surprising since Georges was instrumental for France at right-back. But the United States will need to thank Hope Solo for her tremendous performance in post. France's shots were so powerful that the rest of the story could have been miserable for the Americans.

And then came the moment for the Europeans to celebrate as Bompastor teased, at last, USA goalie Hope Solo with a formidable long rage shot from an acute angle from the left. That goal transformed the remaining moments of the match into an exciting period. With 15 minutes left, it even seemed like extra-time would be required to separate both teams.

However, everything changed at the 79th minute when Wambach scored from a controversial corner as the French had cried for a free-kick for what seemed like a foul on one of their players in the box. 2-1 USA and that wasn’t all.

Thanks to aggressive substitute Rapinoe, the Americans got more effective in attack. Finally, Morgan sealed the United States victory with a looping ball over France’s shot stopper.

Les Bleues will have to play either Japan or Sweden in the third-place match on July 16. In the meantime, the dream goes on for the USA.
