Stoke City vs Fulham Match Preview
Stoke City host Fulham at the Britannia Stadium, with both sides making wholesale changes to their starting line-ups. The sides last met in the Carling Cup in 1994, and Stoke won the tie.
Stoke may rest several key players injured in last weekend’s league action. Winger Jermaine Pennant and forward Kenwyne Jones are two key players expected not to start. Striker Eidur Gudjohnsen is likely to replace Jones in attack.
Fulham are missing two important defensive players in Fredrik Stoor and Rafik Halliche, both due to injuries. Club manager Mark Hughes is still trying to assert his own reputation at the club, after the summer departure of Roy Hodgson to Liverpool.
Stoke City vs Fulham Match Report
Stoke City beat Fulham 2-0 at home. Stoke manager Tony Pulis was fortunate to have striker Kenwyne Jones available from injury, with the forward scoring the second goal. In the end, Fulham manager Mark Hughes was left to rue his limited defensive options.
Stoke took the lead in the 23rd minute, thanks to a header from Danny Higginbotham. Fulham kept trying to pull a goal back, but a trademark throw from Rory Delap was met by a header from Jones to win the match in the 79th minute.
Fulham were constantly under threat, and keeper Mark Schwarzer did his best to keep a few out. At the other end, Danny Murphy and Clint Dempsey saw their shots fail to find the back of the net before the full-time whistle was blown.
