Ergotelis Heraklion vs AE Larissa Match Preview
Ergotelis have only won one match since September and find themselves in a real fight to avoid the drop. This weekend against Larisa they have the chance to climb up the table against a club racked by their own troubling form.
Larisa’s 1-0 home defeat last week against Panionios was painful not only in terms of league position or the fact that it was the team’s final match at their home of 46 years, the Alcazar Stadium, it also stung because after a couple of away draws with Aris and Panathinaikos it appeared that the team had turned a corner.
Next week Giannis Papakostas’ side host PAOK in the first-ever match at the club’s new stadium, the AEL FC Arena. Larisa’s will hope to enter that match in good shape by defeating Ergotelis this weekend.
Ergotelis Heraklion vs AE Larissa Match Report
Ergotelis came out on top with a 2-1 victory over Larisa in Crete. The home side were inspired by Sergio Leal who created one goal, scored another and managed to miss a penalty late on as well. The victory gives Ergotelis some breathing room, while Larisa appear to be in a serious fight against relegation after another bad result which leaves them dead last in the Super League.
Nikos Karageorgiou’s team came out firing and were ahead as early as the 9th minute. Leal crossed into the box and the Larisa defense were unable to deal with the mix-up as Ergotelis’ Diego Romano produced a smart finish at the near post to give his team the lead.
Larisa were back on level terms just minutes later as Fabian Canobbio received a pass by Alexander Simic and the Uruguayan dribbled through the box and neatly finished past Sifis Daskalakis. Then on 26 minutes came a moment that changed the complexion of the match. Ibrahim Tall was given his marching orders and Larisa reduced to 10 men after Tall had dragged down Mario Budimir in the box. Leal took the resulting penalty and made it 2-1 to Ergotelis.
Larisa fought well to try to force an equalizer in the second half and created some chances, but the best fell once again to Ergotelis just three minutes from the end when Leal saw his cheeky spot-kick clip the crossbar and go out after Nikos Dabizas fouled in the box. Larisa might have snatched the tying goal in injury time, but Daskalakis tipped over a long range Jan Blazek shot.
