Two weeks ago, Manchester United travelled to Villa Park for their season´s second Premier League game against Aston Villa. Manchester United hosted and lost by the narrowest of margins to Oneil´s determined Villa back in mid-December. United had a dominant performance but could not score. It seemed like luck was deserting the red devils.
With United continually dropping points, it was a matter of time until most expected Chelsea to widen the gap. But a resurgent United side appeared in late January inspired by the in-form Portuguese winger, Nani who tore up the right wing and provided some tantilizing football by offering Rooney impecable service and facilitating own-goals with his direct attacking display. But Nani, dissapointed at Villa Park earlier this month, and received a red card for a reckless challenge which left Man United one man short. United saw out a gritty performance and drew 1-1. As a result, Nani was given a 3 match ban and will be unavailable for today´s Carling Cup Final.

Their head to head aggregate statistics puts Manchester United as clear favorites. These clubs have faced eachother on a total of 148 occasions. Of those, Man Utd have won 74 times, drawn 36 and lost 38; having scored 268 games and conceded 190. But Aston Villa have not lost this year yet, having only suffered their last defeat at the hands of Liverpool on December 29, 2009. That is 12 games in the running. They will be up for the challenge as they have won the last 2 games with a total aggregate score of 8-3.
Aston Villa are in the running for the prestigious Premier League 4th place, as they battle it out with Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City and Everton. But a Carling Cup Trophy may be enough to satisfy Villa fans and club directors in case Aston Villa falls short.
Man United have squandered 5 points this season to Aston Villa and with those 5 points, Sir Alex Ferguson´s 12th Premier League title seems a little more unrealistic. However United played very positive football in both games and were unlucky with both results. But they have enjoyed some renewed optimism over the last few weeks as a string of incidents are now pointing to a Chelsea implosion.
It´s been one of those seasons, quite an exciting one in fact with a little bit of everything. We have gone from a four-horse race to a three-to-a-two and now back to a three-horse race. After dropping maximum points to Everton and drawing at Villa Park, many believed United had squandered their League Title chances. But Sir Alex Ferguson has been proving everyone wrong since he started collecting silverware as Manchester United coach.
It was 20 years ago when SAF won his first trophy as a Red Devil; The FA Cup against Crystal Palace in 1990. An thus began the Ferguson Era after a 26-year title draught. With no further guarantees of future silveware, and his tenure at United reaching the twilight, you can bet Fergie seize his fourth league cup and 34th overall trophy as United coach.
