Denmark and Japan have 3 points each but the Danes’ 2-0 loss to the Oranje has put them below the Samurai Blue in Group E’s standings. Simple calculations tell us that the Japanese only need a draw to qualify whereas Denmark need to clinch maximum points in order to progress.
Whatever the situation looks like ahead of the Denmark clash, Japan’s boss Takeshi Okada has set his mind on playing for a victory only. The manager, who endured his side’s 1-0 loss against Holland from the dugout, made himself clear by saying:
“For football in Japan like for the entire team, this game is massive. The players have no option but to give everything they have. If they can do that, we can qualify. I have told them not to think about playing for a draw. We have to score and we will try to win from the start of the match.”
Coach Takeshi Okada can be assured about his players’ mental readiness ahead of tonight’s encounter. Understanding his manager’s message, Makoto Hasebe, who features for German side Wolfsburg in club football, declared:
“This is a really important game that is waiting for us. I believe we stake our whole life on this match. We won’t be playing for a draw. We will be going for a win.”
Before playing their opening game against Cameroon – which they won – Japanese players had complained about their short height as a negative factor. Definitely, they don’t match the Danes who have tall players such as Jacob Poulsen. However, Coach Takeshi Okada has plans for his team.
“Having taller players can be an advantage, of course,” the boss admitted before adding:
“But we have played against teams possessing the height advantage already. It doesn’t automatically mean that you win. We will try to do everything we can to stop Denmark’s crosses. For the rest, God will decide if we can get the goal we need. We can’t suddenly make our players taller. We just have to manage with what we’ve got.”

The Japanese might be somewhat worried by Denmark’s height advantage but Danish fans are also wary of their team’s age. Up to 10 players within Denmark’s 2010 World Cup 23-man squad are 30 years of age or above. Christian Poulsen, Thomas Sorensen, Jon Dahl Tomasson, and Dennis Rommedahl are all part of this list of aged players.
But Coach Morten Olsen isn’t bothered the least about this factor. Singling out Chelsea’s Jesper Gronkjaer, he stated boldly:
“What’s 32 years of age? He can play for eight more years, still! If a player is fit and he is not tired of playing, then it’s fantastic. They [Denmark’s players], are experienced. They have played in European cups, World Cups… They know each other as human beings like on the pitch – in terms of strengths and weaknesses. They are qualified because they’ve been able to keep a high level of performance for a long time now.”
Morten Olsen looks extremely confident in his team and although he has a lot of respect for the Japanese, he believes his players have what it takes to win tonight’s game.
“Before the tournament, I said that Japan was one of the teams that could surprise people who are ignorant about Asian football. The Japanese fight for each other and for the team as a whole. Despite all the quality that the Dutch have, you could see that they had many problems against Japan. But, my team can perform better than we’ve done so far and that’s what we will need to do.”
Let’s see which team will grab Group E’s last qualifying spot.
