South Africa’s Bafana Bafana Should Make Their Nation ProudSiphiwe Tshabalala offered a bright start to Bafana’s 2010 World Cup campaign by scoring the tournament’s first goal on the opening day. But Mexico’s Rafael Marquez and Diego Forlan’s Uruguay quickly painted anxiety and frustration on the faces of South Africans. Bafana Bafana’s hopes, after drawing their first game and emphatically losing their other one by three goals to nil, are hanging from a thread. Like the French, they must not only hope that Mexico and Uruguay don’t play out a draw, but also win big on Tuesday afternoon.
SAFA President Kirsten Nematandani is optimistic about the country’s fate at the 2010 World Cup and thinks that the home fans will play a pivotal role against France. He told the press:
“At this stage, the support of the nation is crucial. The players and the technical team are aware of the importance of our next match. We are expecting the team to approach the game with confidence. Our team has shown great potential in all matches. Unfortunately, luck wasn’t on our side when we played against Uruguay.”
Indeed, South Africa’s first-choice goalkeeper Khune was red-carded against Uruguay and will thus have to miss the game against France. His suspension has been cut to only one match following a final decision from the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. Should South Africa fail to progress into the Round of 16, then Khune would have played his last match of the 2010 World Cup against La Celesta Olimpica.
Adding to this blow for the host nation is the fact that midfielder Dikgacoi will also seat out Bafana Bafana’s match against France after picking up two yellow cards already.
So how will South Africa beat 1998 World Cup champions France on Tuesday if even the extreme noise of the Vuvuzela horns couldn’t distract the Uruguayans at the benefit of Carlos Parreira’s men? Football pundits believe that Bafana Bafana’s strength will have to rely on France’s internal and external weaknesses.

It’s gone public! France’s team spirit has been cut into pieces under hated figure Coach Raymond Domenech. “L’affaire Anelka” has disrupted the French more than ever. Confirmed reports indicated that France’s Nicolas Anelka blasted Raymond Domenech at half time during Les Bleus’ game against Mexico following the manager’s criticism over the player’s performance on the pitch.
This led to Anelka being commanded to quit from the squad and go back home to France for the meantime. Subsequent to this controversial issue, Patrice Evra and the rest of his team mates boycotted training on Sunday and issued a statement that clearly revealed their position.
“We regret the incident which occurred at half-time, we regret even more the fact that such an incident which should be discussed within the squad was made public.”
Now South Africans may be wrong to rejoice so quickly over France’s chaos as the players are ready to use the honor of carrying the French jersey as their motif to make a positive impact against the 2010 World Cup’s hosts. Part of their issued statement read:
“We haven’t forgotten our duties. We will do everything at an individual and collective level to bring honor to France with a positive performance n Tuesday night.”
France are in danger of crashing out from the 2010 FIFA World Cup with a terrible goalless record following their 0-0 draw against Uruguay and 2-0 defeat against Mexico. Likewise, they could make the greatest comeback to reach the next stage of the competition should the result between Group A’s other contenders go their way. Coach Raymond Domenech expressed his unhappiness at his side’s poor form and his optimism ahead of the crucial battle against Bafana Bafana.
“The feeling that dominates is sadness. I believe in this team because it has potential and quality, but I am disappointed.
“We have a game left and we must react and show something. We must go out with dignity and show that France can score. We will be playing for a miracle and for our pride. A miracle is possible…”
To put salt on the wounds of depressed French fans, the hated manager concluded:
“Anyways, when things don’t depend on us, there’s no need to dream.”
