England - USA Live Commentary

90 + 4' Herculez Gomez was trying to come on for Dempsey but the referee blows for full-time. Certainly a good game, but not one Rob Green will forget in a hurry. Let's not get too het up about drawing against the USA. They're not a bad side at all so maybe a point isn't the worst result in the world. Thanks for your e-mails, sorry if yours didn't get on air.
90 + 3 ' Dempsey chests the ball down from 35 yards out and shoots woefully wide. He fancies his chances with Green in goal!
90 + 2 ' Cole sends in a diagonal cross but Onyemu gets above Crouch and heads out. Crouch is later flagged offside.
90 + 1' Donovan's corner is headed out by Gerrard and England regain possession.
90 ' Worrying moments for England as Donovan plays in Holden but his cross hits the legs of Cole and goes out for a corner. Fout extra minutes.
89' Another long-ranger from Uncle Sam as Donovan clears the bar with a rising drive.
88' England losing momentum as they pass the ball around at the back. Looks like England are settling for a draw as well.
87' From the free-kick Carragher sends over a cross for Crouch, who gets above Onyemu but the ball goes out for a goal-kick despite lennon's best efforts to keep it in.
86' Indeed he is. Bolton midfielder Holden comes on for striker Altidore. Looks like they're settling for a draw.
85' Looks like Stuart Holden is coming on for the USA.
84' Another chance for England as Lampard shapes to shoot but feeds Lennon instead. The Spurs winger pulls the ball back from the right by-line but Onyemu gets back to keep out Lampard. Superb challenge.
83' Onyemu fouls Rooney but England can't take advantage of the free-kick. Moments later Rooney flicks teh ball into the path of Cole, who is booked for charging into the back of Dempsey. Make peace Ashley, not war! Couldn't resist.
82' A trully terrible pass from Lampard for Johnson which goes out for a USA throw.
81' Rooney floats in a cross from the left for Crouch, who can't get any power on his header and Howard collects. Gerrard then gives the ball away for Buddle to shoot from 35 yards only for his effort to be blocked.
80' Terry gives it a 'have it' clearance from the back, but England are soon back on the ball.
79' Buddle feeds Donovan on the left, but the midfielder's control is poor and the ball runs out for a throw. Heskey is off and Peter Crouch is on for England. Last throw of the dice!
78' USA on the ropes as Johnson's cross from the right flicks off Onyemu for a corner which is taken by Gerrard and headed out by Bradley.
77' It's all England now as Gerrard sends over a geat cross, but Heskey heads over under pressure from DeMerit. Findlay is taken off and replaced by Edson Buddle, who has looked sharp in the freindlies.
76' From the resulting corner Rooney just gets flick on the ball which deflects off Bradley. The Man Utd man retrieves the ball and crosses straight at Howard.
75' Rooney sets up SWP for another one-on-one, but there's no conviction in his shot which is straight at Howard.

72' Heskey is struggling at rthe moment and may have to come off. Still on at the moment though.
71' Half a chance for England as Gerrard curls in a cross which is just too high for Rooney, who got the slightest of touches.
70' Lennon sends in a poor cross but it falls to SWP, who is tackled on the edge of the box. Rooney sniffs a chance with the loose ball but it's cleared off his toes.
69' Heskey penalised for a foul inside the centre circle but England are soon back on the ball.
68' Onyemu is penalised for going through the back of Heskey 35 yards out. Lampard lines it up. However, he shoots well over. Poor effort.
67' Gerrard fills in at right-back for the moment as Johnson's lip is wiped clean. England keeping possession while they're down to 10 men.
66' Johnson has a bloody lip and needs treatment as play stops for a moment.
65' The great escape for England and a moment to make Green feel better! Altidore eases past Carragher and only has Green to beat. He shoots from a tight angle but Green pushes the ball against the post.
64' Lampard's corner is controlled brilliantly first time by Johnson at the far post but he shoots pas the near post. Great chance goes begging.

62' Donovan whips in the free-kick which comes off the side of Bocanegra's face and goes out for a goal-kick.

60' Poor tackle by Carragher on Findlay rightly earns the Liverpool defender a caution.
59' Cole winning his battle with Donovan. Ball cleared upfield for Rooney and it's a straight race between him and Onyemu which the AC Milan man wins.
58' Findlay makes a burst into the box as he tries to get on the end of a through-ball but it's too quick even for him.
57' Carragher sees the ball out under pressure from Altidore but it's athrow to the USA.
56' Cole gets in a good tackle on Donovan, throw to England.
55' SWP jinks one way then the other but he's tackled by Cherundolo. Carragher has a word or two with Donovan, and the ref steps in as the USA are awarded a free-kick. Bocanegra gets above a defender but he heads it straight at Johnson, who clears.
54' Heskey is on the move again but he's flagged offside - this time incorrectly.

46' Second substitution for England as King comes off for Jamie Carragher. Must be injured. England get second half under way.
' Mark in Ireland says "Really feel for Green, he's better than that. England to settle into a passing game and win by one."
' John, in Canada, says "it's time to take off the donkeys Rooney and Heskey and bring in the Spurs duo." Rooney having a very quiet game
' Keith Tawanda Mudiwa says "England will win it by two. Good game so far."
' Ann, in Hawaii, returns and tells me she has had a nice shopping experience in St Louis! "What a howler from Robert Green. But we can still win this and look most likely to score next! 2-1 to England. Rooney to score next."
' California Steve returs: "I agree. I thought the US counterattack would be a threat, but it's England's counter that looks more dangerous, and likely to produce a goal. What I can't believe is how much possession the US have held. What do you think of a 2-2 final? I think Donovan will be a big factor in the second half. You saw what he can do with Everton, and he's done the same with Galaxy. By the way, just like two hours ago, it's 65 degrees here in Orange County and clear, likely to remain that way through October as well." Thanks Steve, no really, thanks. Donovan and Dempsey are great players. Fulham are lucky to have a midfielder of his class.
' Betting update from Sky Bet. Ryan Coombs writes: "For all England's dominance it's the age old problem of goalkeepers which lets USA back into the game in which can only be described as a 'howler' from Robert Green. England are out to 8/11 now to claim three points with the draw right into 17/10. USA will be looking to sneak a win and can be backed at 7/1 to win 2-1. Dempsey is an appealing 14/1 to score next."
' Jim Honeyman has seen it all before. "Typical England, score one and sit back."
' It's the end of the first half in Rustenburg. How can England pick up Green from that mistake? It's been a fairly even half. The USA look good on the ball but England look more likely to score the next goal IMOH.
45 + 3' England try one last attack before the end of the half as SWP tries to skip past Cherundolo but succeeds simply in running the ball out of play.
45 + 2 ' Heskey is flagged offside on the left touchline. On the balance of play the USA probably deserved that equaliser, just a shame it had to be in that way.
45 + 1 ' Lampard's cross is headed out to Wright-Phillips but the ball is soon back with Green. Three minutes extra to be played. Replay shows that the USA defenders were using man-handling tactics at that corner.
45' Lennon gets down the right and his cross is turned away for a corner by Onyemu.
44' It's all been about the keepers in the build-up to the game and that's why! You've got to feel for Green though. He'll never live it down.
43' Heskey is down injured after going up for an aerial challenge with DeMerit.
42' The replay is even worse. Dempsey's left-footed shot bounces twice in front of Green before going in off his hands. A truly shocking blunder.
41' Brilliant mazy run from Johnson as England look to regain the lead but his left-footed shot is well saved by Howard.
40' GOAL DEMPSEY! Horrendous error from Green. Dempsey shoots and Green looks to have it covered but is slips through his fingers and dribbles over the line.
39' First yellow card for the USA as Cherundolo is booked ror fouling Wright-Phillips.
38' Dempsey slips the ball to Findlay, who leaves it for Donovan. Hos shot from 25 yards as Green scrambling but the West Ham keeper had it covered.
37' Wright-Phillips has a pop from an angle about 25 yards out but it swerves away from goal and does not trouble Howard.
36' King kicks the ball against the hand of Altidore and England get a free-kick inside their own half.
35' Lampard swings in the corner and Rooney nearly gets on the end of it with a half-volley but he doesn't make a clean connection and the USA clear.
33' Long ball up front for Heskey to chase, who caught Howard's arm in that earlier incident. This time Howard bursts out and collects the ball. Howard is in discomfort though.
32' Johnson does well to take the ball off Donovan down England's right. USA regain control and Altidore tries his luck with a daisy cutter from 35 yards which Green gathers fairly comfortably.
31' Howard is still receiving treatment but think he'll be OK. Camera pans to Capello, who lloked furious with an earlier incident. That's the spirit Fabio!
30' Milner has been taken off and replaced by Shaun Wright-Phillips. Capello must be worried about a second yellow card.
29' Gerrard swings in the corner and Michael Bradley clears the danger. England are back on the ball though and Johnson sends over a dangerous low cross which Howard struggles to deal with. Heskey crashes into the Everton keeper, who is in pain.
28' Heskey finds space down the left but his cross is too far for Rooney, but Lennon gathers and England have a corner.
27' Donovan's curling cross is headed over by Onyemu, who looks a real threat at set-pieces.
26' Milner is first name in the book as he brings down pacy right-back Cherundolo.
25' Lennon causes panic with a run intio the box but loses control. the ball nearly falls to Rooney, but the ball is eventually played back to Howard, who clears.
24' Altidore tries to pick out the run of Findlay but King was alert again. Steady start by the Spurs defender.
23' King tries to find Heskey again with a long punt upfield. The loose ball falls to Rooney, but he loses possession.
22' It's been an opening quarter and an encouraging one in some ways. Let's hope England keep their concentration.
21' Rooney then tries his luck from distance as England start to get on top but Howard makes a low save.
20' Lennon is clean through down the right but elects to cross as he bears down on Howard. Jay DeMerit makes a brilliant clearance. Lampard latches on to the rebound but Howard saves.
19' A lucky escape for England as Donovaan delivers a delicious cross into the box for Altidore, who doesn't even make contact with his head. Think he bottled that one under pressure from King
18' Terry concedes a free-kick as Donovan looked to burst clear.
17' Cherundolo sends one down the right channel for Donovan but it's overhit and Green allows the ball to run out for a goal-kick.
16' USA are enjoying most of the possession at the moment. England need to be wary of the threat they pose.
15' King lumps the ball up for Heskey, who is flagged offside. Gerrard then goes in for a full-bloodied challenge on Dempsey. Ouch!
14' This time it's taken short and Cherundolo has acres of space with which to send over a cross. He delivers it low beyond Rooney but fortunately for England it evades everyone. Lucky escape for Capello's men.
13' It's a decent delivery and Onyewu gets in a header which comes off an England player for another corner. Gerrard then concedes another corner
12' USA starting to show neat touches now. Findlay shows his pace as he tries to cross from the by-line but Terry is there again to concede a corner.
11' First decent chance for the States as Clint Dempsey gets on the end of a cross and heads the ball down into the hands of Green. Moments later Johnson's cross is too deep and it drifts over the bar.
10' Lampard takes the corner and the ball comes off the hand of Glen Johnson. Free-kick to the USA.
9' England have a free-kick 50 yards out. Lampard drives it in and it deflects off Donovan for a corner.
8' Donovan tries to get behind the England defence but Terry gets in a typically brave sliding tackle and the ball bounces out for a goal-kick.
7' James Milner brings down Steve Cherundolo and gives away a free-kick.
6' Green hoofs the ball upfield for Heskey but it bounces off his chest and the USA regain possession.
5' Well, well, well. Landon Donovan plays the ball out wide to Findlay, who is offside again.
4' England get a throw which Lampard picks up and tries to pass to Rooney. The ball overruns to Heskey, who plays in Gerrard and he flicks the ball past Tim Howard. What a start!
3' Robbie Findlay is flagged offside and Terry leaves the ball to Rob Green. Emile Heskey gets a flick-on but he can't quite find Rooney.
2' Ledley King gets an early taste of Jozy Altidore and beats him easily with a header. Capello is already pointing, directing traffic. Altidore gets in a cross from the left and John Terry clears.
1' USA get the game under way! The waiting is finally over.
1930' Steve Andersen is in California (I am not jealous, I am not jealous...) He writes: "You wouldn't believe the buzz in the beachfront bars in Southern California. People were turning up, grabbing seats at the bar two hours before kick-off, sort of like an NBA play-off game featuring the Lakers. Regardless of what happens, this is a long way for the US from a semi-pro league and a national team playing friendlies against FC Zurich (Feb 1993) at high school stadiums in southern California." Great stuff Steve. Now to the action
1928' The Star Spangled Banner now gets the full treatment. It's getting closer!
1927' The national anthem is now being sung. Milner, Lennon and Rooney stayed mum, while Johnson and King mumbled something or other. No matter.
1925' Fabio Capello is at the back, hands in pockets, oh so nonchalant. Both teams are walking in line onto the pitch holding the hands of childrean
1922' The players are in the tunnel waiting to get onto the Rustenburg turf. Tim Howard shakes hands with counterpart Rob Green. I'd say the USA look more relaxed.
1921' Oh no, Keegan reckons England are going to win 4-1. We all know what happened with one of his predictions.
1920' Werner is back: "Just love how competitive people get over football, it's a matter of opinion and we will always differ.. no doubt in my mind and I'm sure you will agree that it is THE BEAUTIFUL GAME! Cannot wait for this one.. wish Beckham could have been fit for a run on here and there for a few good, no, no great crosses. What he has done for football worldwide is beyond words.. hope this team and Beckham walks away with a winners' medal..GO ENGLAND!"
1914' "I'm So Bored of the USA" by The Clash is now belting out on TV. What a song - three minutes of genius.
1912' Gareth Southgate says you can't take any team for granted at the World Cup and has picked out Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey as his danger men. He didn't mention Dozy Altidore. I hope I don't regret saying that.
1910' Betting news now from Sky Bet, who make England 1/2 to win the game, the draw is 3/1 and the USA are 6/1.
1905' Paul Le Marechal describes himself as a very disappointed England fan watching in Burlington, Ontario, Canada. He writes: "You are kidding me - Heskey? I would rather have seen my dear old mum playing up front! Who does that guy have secret pictures on to keep getting picked? Bring on the Crouch!" I'm going to stick my neck out and say you're right Paul. Crouch for me, too.
1902' Half an hour to go but Jim is back: "If USA win the cup I will give up watching FOOTBALL (not soccer)".I'll save this e-mail Jim, just in case.
' England: Green, Johnson, Terry, King, Ashley Cole, Lennon, Lampard, Gerrard, Milner, Heskey, Rooney. Subs: James, Barry,Carragher, Carrick, Joe Cole, Crouch, Dawson, Defoe, Upson, Warnock, Wright-Phillips, Hart.
' USA: Howard, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Onyewu, Bocanegra, Dempsey, Bradley, Clark, Donovan, Findley, Altidore. Subs: Guzan, Beasley, Bornstein, Buddle, Edu, Feilhaber, Gomez, Goodson, Holden, Spector, Torres, Hahnemann.
' Our referee tonight is Carlos Simon from Brazil
1857' Alexei Lalas (hats off to the great man, who has now has a sensible hair cut) has just announced "it's England v USA - you know you're shaking in your boots".
1856' A USA fan has just made the bold claim that his team will win the World Cup. When asked why he thought that he simply said "because I'm American". Nothing like unfettered confidence.
1853' Jim Honeyman disagrees with me on the Milner front. "Why is Joe Cole not playing or Crouch? Milner is not that good." Think Capello rates him as a better defender than Cole, Jim - someone who will track the runs of Donovan.
1850' Think I'll introduce a timer to increase the drama. Rob Green just warming up with a few windmills. He looks a bit nervous but aren't we all? Sure he'll be fine once he gets a first touch of the ball. The camera flashes to Wayne Rooney, who looks very relaxed.
' Ann is in Hawaii (hey Ann, my sister is in St Louis and has taken an England flag over there for the game. Try to stay awake - I'm sure you will). Anyway, she writes: "The game we have all been waiting for! It's hard being an England supporter in Hawaii. But we're here. Looking for Rooney to score first! Let the Three Lions roar!"
' Manchester City midfielder and, it's fair to say, Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira is backing England to win this one. I just get the feeling it will be close though. The USA are no mugs and have some dangerous players in their team - big fan of Clint Dempsey.
' Intersting thoughts from Werner Coetzee, who joined us for the Argentina-Nigeria game. He is living in South Africa and is our man on the inside! He writes: "As a football supporter and very very passionate about UK football especially (where I got my passion from watching Chelsea at Stamford bridge) I truly feel the starting XI isn't the best one. I wouldn't even have Heskey in the squad, but all managers are different. My team would have been as follows: Hart, Johnson, Terry, King, A Cole, J Cole, Lampard. Gerrard. Lennon. Rooney and Defoe. Good luck, I really think it's England's best chance as they have experience on and off the field. When a game gets away from you, you need experience and England have a lot of it. I hope you win not just tonight but the whole thing! 44 years since 66!" Thanks Werner.
' The 40,000-capacity Royal Bafokeng Stadium is starting to fill up nicely as we prepare for kick-off in around 50 minutes' time. I'm starting to get my hopes up now as we closer to the start. I'm glad to see Milner get the nod as he's had a great season for Aston Villa. I've got Aaron Lennon in my dream team so I'm expecting big things from him as well down the right wing.
' Here's a bit more detail on the England line-up: Robert Green won the England goalkeeping battle as Fabio Capello named the West Ham man in his side to face the United States in tonight's World Cup opener in Rustenburg. Capello had vowed to wait until two hours before kick-off to tell his players which lucky 11 would begin the first match in Group C and Green got the call after holding off the challenge of Joe Hart and David James. It was the sensible choice given Hart is so inexperienced and James has apparently been struggling with a knee injury. Having played in eight of England's last 11 matches, Green is used to operating behind John Terry, Glen Johnson and Ashley Cole, who formed three-quarters of the defence, along with Ledley King. With James Milner's fitness confirmed after a minor virus earlier in the week, the Aston Villa midfielder was handed his first competitive start for England and was expected to take up a position wide on the left in an effort to subdue the threat of Landon Donovan. It meant Joe Cole missed out as Aaron Lennon was chosen to fill the wide berth on the right flank with Emile Heskey partnering Wayne Rooney up front as expected.
' Here's the team in full: Robert Green, Glen Johnson, John Terry, Ledley King, Ashley Cole, Aaron Lennon, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Wayne Rooney, Emile Heskey.
