Manchester United vs VfL Wolfsburg Match Preview

Wolfsburg seat on top of Manchester United due to a better goal difference. The German Bundesliga champions scored three goals past CSKA Moscow thanks to Grafite’s hat-trick. And despite conceding a goal, they edge Manchester United who could only win 1-0 away to Besiktas on the same night.

The last time Manchester United came up against a German side, they lost. That was during a pre-season match against Bayern Munich in the Audi Cup.

This fact will have little or no impact at all on Wednesday when Wolfsburg and Manchester United clash against each other.

However, coach Armin Veh is eying permanent success following his side’s deserved victory over CSKA Moscow in Germany.

After their 3-1 win against the Russians, Armin Veh said:

"This win could be the start of something great. I am confident that we can keep up this form."

But Manchester United will surely try to get in the way of Armin Veh’s wish by making it very hard for Wolfsburg at Old Trafford.

Wayne Rooney is expected to get off the mark with what would then be his first goal in the Champions League this season.

The 23-year-old English striker is an essential player in Manchester United’s squad. According to Brian McClair who is the director of Manchester United’s academy, Wayne Rooney is now in the same ranks as Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s superstar duo composed of Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

He told the media:

"You would have to look at him on the same level as them."

Meanwhile, Manchester United are struggling defensively since the absence of Edwin Van der Sar. The Dutch goalkeeper is currently on the sidelines with a broken hand.

Ben Foster has been chose ahead of Thomasz Kuszczak. Foster displayed a shaky performance lacking of confidence against Manchester City this season, and the legendary Peter Schmeichel believes that the hole created by Edwin Van der Sar’s absence has not been filled. 

He told United Review:

"Ben Foster has done well this season and he certainly looks to be a very good goalkeeper. He's getting a run of games now, but I'm sure Edwin will be back in when he's fit because the manager knows he's the right guy for the team at the moment.”
