About Pro League
Pro League History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Saudi Pro League is the top football category in Saudi Arabia. It was launched in 1976 under the name Saudi Premier League, and it has become one of the most interesting league tournaments to follow in Asia.
The format of the competition sees all teams facing each other twice between August and May, with the team that earns the most points being crowned as champions. Over the years, the Saudi Pro League has operated under a promotion-relegation system, which sees three teams from the Pro League being relegated to the Saudi First League, leaving their spots for three teams from that league.
Added to promotion and relegation from this league, the competition also gives its teams a chance to play in continental competitions, such as the AFC Champions League. Furthermore, the winner and two runners-up get an invite to play the Saudi Super Cup.
Since its inception, the league has been populated by some of the toughest teams in Asia, which include Al Hilal, Al Nassr, or Al Ittihad. In fact, Al Hilal is the most successful team in this league, having finished among the top two in over 30 seasons and with 18 titles to their name.
Coverage of the Saudi Pro League has been awarded to SSC and Shahid, who earned broadcast and streaming rights until 2025. In the United States, Fox Sports won bidding rights to air the Saudi Pro League games until the end of 2024.
