About

France 4 History, Coverage, Features

France 4 is a French free-to-air television channel, owned and operated by France Televisions. The channel was launched in 1996 as Festival, but it would later be rebranded to France 4 in 2005. France 4 is a sister channel to France 2, France 3 and its regional channels, and France 5.

During its earlier years, France 4 aired entertainment shows, sports programs, TV series, sci-fi shows, and movies. Since 2014, France 4 changed the approach of their shows by aiming their broadcasts to a younger audience, especially teenagers. In order to help out with the educational efforts of the French government during the 2020 coronavirus crisis in the country, France 4 aired live high school and middle school classes. The channel was scheduled for termination in August 2020, but the coronavirus crisis prevented it from happening.

Speaking about sports, France 4 worked as an overflow channel to cover some of the top events in the world, such as the Winter Olympics and the Summer Olympics. Other events covered by France 4, both exclusively or as an overflow channel, have included the Women’s First Division in France, the European Rugby Challenge, Basketball World Championships for both men and women,  and the Dakar Rally, to name a few.

Over the years, France 4 has expanded its coverage beyond French borders. Neighboring countries such as Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Portugal, Switzerland, and Monaco have aired this channel’s content in their respective territories.

France 4 broadcasts its content on both HD and SD formats, although programming in the SD version might differ from what is aired on the HD feed.
