After two decades, Gianluigi Buffon has come full circle - returning to the club where he started his professional career.

Earlier this season, Gianluigi Buffon announced that his time at Juventus was coming to an end. Despite this, the 43-year-old made it clear that he wasn't 100 percent ready just yet to hang up his gloves, leaving fans wondering where his next destination would be.

With the exception of a one year stint with PSG during the 2017/2018 campaign, the 2006 World Cup winner has spent his entire career in Italy. Nonetheless, that didn't prevent some from speculating that maybe he'd consider a spell in the United States, with some MLS sides reportedly keen.

However, Buffon clearly is very attached to his native Italy and has no interest in another sojourn abroad. This was confirmed today with a very interesting announcement regarding his newest destination.

After 20 years, the Italian legend has decided to return to the very club where he started his professional career: Parma. Talk about coming full circle! Buffon first started out at Parma as a 17-year-old in 1995 and spent six seasons there, winning a Coppa Italia, a UEFA Cup, and a Supercoppa Italiana before making a big money move to Juventus in 2001.

At the time, the €52 million La Vecchia Signora spent on him was a record amount for a goal-keeper; that has since been broken by Spanish international Kepa Arrizabalaga's 2018 transfer from Athletic Bilbao to Chelsea which cost the Blues a whopping €80 million.

And Parma, who are currently under American ownership with Kyle Krause as CEO, are clearly very pleased about having their former player back in their ranks:

While there's a lot of excitement about his return, Buffon will have quite a lot of work to do next season, as the Crociati were relegated to Serie B after an utterly horrendous campaign.
