Fans may want Messi to keep on playing forever, and even if he wanted to, he cannot promise he will make it to one more FIFA World Cup with La Albiceleste.
The Argentine ace, who won the 2022 edition with his national team, shared his doubts on how possible it would be for him to play the tournament in 2026. Speaking in an interview with Migue Granados, "La Pulga" admitted that he plans to weigh in on his health and other issues before making a final ruling on whether he will be around to defend the 2022 title with La Albiceleste in approximately three years.
"I don't know if I will be able to play in the next World Cup. I try not to think about it because it is still very far away," Messi stated.
The footballer did share his excitement to play one more edition in the 2024 Copa América, which is set to be played in the United States.
"I do think about the Copa América. It's going to be a nice experience because when we played the Copa América Centenario (in 2016) it was a great tournament for us, even if we lost the title. After the Copa América I will have a better idea, it will depend on how I feel. Many years have gone by, let's see how I feel when the time comes, I want to take it day by day, there are three years left before it starts," Messi added.
The player went on to add how happy he is living in the United States, prompting those who ask him about what he will do once retirement is inminent to refrain from doing so.
"I don't know, I don't want to think about that either, and I want to keep enjoying myself. I took a huge step when I decided to leave Europe and come here, I don't want to keep thinking about what's next at the moment. I want to keep playing and enjoy myself. I am lucky enough to have a job that I love, and even if I still have responsibilities and goals, it is still something I enjoy," Messi said.
The Argentine player was subbed off from his most recent game with Inter Miami due to a muscular issue. Nevertheless, coach Tata Martino has not ruled him out of playing the 2023 U.S. Open Cup next Wednesday.
