The Spanish defender has become the most-capped European men's payer ever.

Sergio Ramos has officially become the European with most the international appearances in men's football history. Following his outing in Saturday's UEFA Nations League against Switzerland, the 35-year-old defender took his overall tally to 177, surpassing the record previously set by Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon.

Ramos made his debut for Spain in March 2005 in a game in which La Roja won via a 3-0 scoreline. Since then, the Real Madrid defender has been almost indispensable, establishing himself as a rock in their backline while occasionally scoring goals to propel them to wins. Indeed, his contributions have been enormous as the success enjoyed by the country in the Euro 2008 and 2012 as well as the 2010 FIFA World Cup, cannot be mentioned without crediting him.

In the 1-1 draw with the Netherlands in Wednesday's friendly, Ramos tied with Buffon's total international appearances of 176. The latter managed the feat with his last game for Italy in March 2018. Against Switzerland in the Nations League on Wednesday, the Spain captain owned the record by leading his team out. He, however, saw his remarkable penalty scoring run ending in a frustrating fashion.

Trailing by a goal to nil, the Real Madrid center half had the opportunity to restore parity after a handball decision against Roberto Rodriguez went in their favor. After scoring in his previous 25 attempts, he failed to land this one with Switzerland's Yann Sommer going the right way to parry the ball away. Watch:

Another chance for redemption presented itself in the 78th minute but, once again, Ramos had his effort saved. The player's decision to opt for a "panenka" this time turned out to be an awful decision with Yann Sommer staying his ground to gather the weak effort.
