Arsenal took on Crystal Palace on the first day of 2017, as they looked to build on their narrow 1-0 win over West Brom. The game saw Olivier Giroud start having been used as a super-sub on several occasions this season.
With fans eager to begin the year with a win, an early miss from the Frenchman irritated the supporters. The supporters quickly turned on him, and rightly so, as it was a golden opportunity.
However, he quickly won over the supporters and the entire Internet by breaking the deadlock with an excellent goal – possibly even a goal of the season contender. Giroud beat the goalkeeper with a exquisite scorpion kick after surprisingly connecting with an Alexis Sanchez cross.
The ball went up, bounced of the net post, and hit the back of the net in a goal that won’t be forgotten anytime soon. Fans were even quick to hail his strike as a better goal than Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s scorpion kick goal.
Imagine Messi had just done what Giroud did, would be talked about for decades as the greatest goal ever

2017 will be full of goals of all shapes & styles. If any are even close to the quality of Giroud's scorpion, I can't wait to see them. #AFC

No debate over whether Giroud's scorpion kick was better than Mkhitaryan's. Easy - one was onside and the other wasn't
