Barcelona’s search for Neymar’s replacement has seen them turn to Philippe Coutinho. The Liverpool ace has handed in a transfer request in order to force a move to Camp Nou, but unfortunately for the Blaugrana, the Reds remain reluctant to sell their star player.
As a result, the Catalan giants have kept their options open. Although Coutinho remains top priority, reports out of Spain claim another South American target has emerged on the Copa del Rey champions’ radar: Angel Di Maria.
According to Marca, the Ligue 1 giants are willing to offload the Argentine star. One potential suitor is Barcelona, and they have Lionel Messi to thank.
The report claims that La Pulga has encouraged the board to seek his compatriot’s services. The two share an excellent bond in the national side, and could exploit this chemistry in La Liga and Europa.
However, Barcelona are pessimistic about the deal for two reasons. The first and the most obvious is Di Maria’s connection with Real Madrid. The Argentine spent several seasons at the Bernabeu and his affection for his former club could kill the transfer.
Secondly, the Blaugrana have a strained relationship with Les Parisiens due to Neymar’s transfer. PSG’s world record move for Barcelona’s Brazilian ace has reportedly created a hostile relationship. Di Maria would definitely bring quality to Camp Nou, but the number of obstacles makes this deal hard to believe.
