Serie A round-up: What fans can expect on the final matchday

The 2017/2018 Serie A season comes to an end this weekend! LiveSoccerTV.com casts an eye over the past campaign and what's in store for the final matchday.

Juventus are now the new champions of Italy. It's been a very entertaining Scudetto battle, as Napoli were desperate to push the race for as long as possible. The Partenopei threw all their efforts into trying to win the Serie A title, even sacrificing runs in the Coppa Italia, the Champions League, and the Europa League, but came up empty-handed.

At this point, with Juventus having won their seventh title in a row, do any of the other 19 side have anything left to play for on the final matchday of the season?

Actually, they do. Let's have a look.

The race for the Champions League (and the Europa League, too)

Juventus have locked down one Champions League spot. Napoli are set to finish as runners-up, and hopefully next season, the Partenopei will take the Champions League a bit more seriously, especially after watching how Roma really impressed and made it all the way to the semi-finals. Speaking of the Giallorossi, they find themselves in third, and will be hoping that Inter can do them a favor and beat Lazio to make sure that the Biancocelesti don't pip them to third spot on the final matchday.

The Inter-Lazio game will be one to keep an eye on for sure, as it'll decide who gets to feature in the Champions League and who ends up heading into the Europa League!

Meanwhile, AC Milan will have to settle for the Europa League again after failing to win the Coppa Italia. The Rossoneri were humiliated 4-0 by Juventus and despite spending big, missed out on a top-four berth. If they're not careful, the Diavolo, who sit in sixth, could end up slipping into seventh if they stumble against Fiorentina this Sunday and Atalanta beat Cagliari.

The desperate fight to avoid the drop

Benevento's miserable time as debutants came to an abrupt end a couple rounds back. Le Streghe finally ended their wait for a first-ever away win as they beat AC Milan 1-0 at the Stadio San Siro, but it was all in vain, as they were sent back down to Serie B.

Hellas Verona have also already been relegated, meaning that there's one more spot for another unlucky side. And that's where things get very interesting.

Right now, Crotone look set to head back down, but the Squali are experts at pulling off great escapes. They did it last term, so don't count them out. Also on the verge of being dropped include SPAL, Cagliari, Udinese, and Chievo, although SPAL and Cagliari are the ones who are definitely more nervous heading into matchday 38.

Other interesting tidbits

Gianluigi Buffon is set to hang up his gloves at the end of the season. Who knows if this will be or him truly saying arrivederci or not, but Juventus are sure to give him a fine send-off as they take on Hellas Verona. It's set to be a very emotional match for Juve fans and calcio neutrals, that's for certain.

Ciro Immobile and Mauro Icardi will have the spotlight on them as Lazio and Inter battle for a Champions League spot. Immobile has missed Lazio's last few games due to injury and will be desperate to feature on Sunday, as he's in danger of missing out on the Capocannoniere if Icardi can net a couple of goals against the Aquile. Plenty of intrigue and plenty of reasons not to miss that huge Sunday evening game.
