A few years ago, City vs. Liverpool would have been a must win fixture for Liverpool. Now, things have changed.
The great Liverpool started falling from grace in 2009. Ever since then, Liverpool has been stuck in a period of constant changes; very few of those changes has been for the betterment of the club.
As Liverpool fell from the top of the mountain, City rose up. Manchester City finished fifth in the season in which Liverpool fell out of the top four. They grew stronger and famously went on to claim the title in 2012. This season, they are second, on course for yet another strong finish in the league.
Today, the clash looks much more different than it did a couple of seasons ago. The onus is on City to win the match.
Liverpool is currently sitting in seventh place on 35 points. Manchester City sits on a whopping 52 points. City has won 15 of their games so far. Liverpool’s nine wins fade in comparison. Liverpool has changed their playing style from the past as has City.
City does not yet have a definite style. However, much of their play for the past two seasons domestically has centred on a fast paced attack. City can tend to get defensive sometimes; however, this is down to Roberto Mancini’s love of the ‘Italian’ style of play. Liverpool could be described in the same way a couple of seasons ago as City is now.
However, Brendan Rodgers wanted to change the way the team plays after he came in. He decided to take Liverpool down the road which has seen Barcelona win numerous titles. He wanted Liverpool to be a possession based side. However, Rodgers does not perhaps realize that Liverpool’s players are not exactly made for this kind of play.
Liverpool has done well in some matches with this style of play. Progress is noticeable in some matches. However, nine wins are not good enough for a club of Liverpool’s stature. Liverpool has struggled in some matches; their possession based play does not include pressing. The club from Merseyside can play in other ways too of course; they played on the counter-attack against Arsenal and could have come away with a win.
Another change in this clash is in terms of the quality of the pitch. Very few fans can doubt that City currently has players of higher quality within their squad whereas, in the past, Liverpool had the better players. Liverpool undoubtedly has good players too. However, City’s overall quality is higher.
Liverpool has always had tradition; they were a wining club throughout most of their history. City is trying to build a similar tradition. In terms of tradition and history, City still has someway to go before overcoming Liverpool. For now though, they are winning the battle on and off the pitch.
