It was one of the biggest, most popular transfer sagas of 2013. Arsenal were in search of a world-class striker, as they always are, and indentified Luis Suarez as the ideal candidate.
The Uruguayan was a Liverpool star back then, and was excelling in the Premier League. The Gunners, who believed that the player had a £40m release clause, bid £40,000,001 for the former Ajax ace.
The moved failed, with Liverpool owner John Henry “What are they smoking over there at the Emirates?” in response. Wenger, however, has now revealed that Suarez was keen on an Emirates switch.
Le Prof gave an interview with beIN Sports, claiming personal terms had been agreed with the Uruguayan. The French manager also admitted that Arsenal were wrongly informed about the player’s release clause.
“He was very close (to signing for Arsenal). We had an agreement with the player. We had been wrongly advised that he had a clause, with a minimal clause, but we had an agreement with the player. You can ask him," Wenger said (as per the Mirror).
Suarez ended up staying at Anfield that year before signing for Barcelona in 2014. Since joining the Spanish giants, he has won the Champions League and FIFA Club World Cup alongside domestic success in Spain.
