The game between Liverpool and Manchester United will steal most of the headlines this weekend, and the legendary rivalry between two of the most winning teams in English football's history will also have a different angle to observe: the coaching battle between Louis Van Gaal and Jürgen Klopp.
These managers met four times while coaching Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Each boss has won two games against the other, curiously enough during the same season.
Their first meeting goes back to September of 2009, when Van Gaal's Bayern Munich outscored Borussia Dortmund 5-1. Even though the first half ended with a tight 2-1 score, Thomas Müller proved key for the Bavarians, scoring a brace to lead LVG's crew to glory.
Their next meeting took place in February of 2010, and once again Bayern emerged victorious. Klopp's men were unable to hold on to their 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes, and Die Roten managed to score three times to seal the deal in the second half. Bayern would go on to win the Bundesliga and DFB Pokal titles, while Klopp's Dortmund ended the season without silverware.
Van Gaal took all the points in their first two meetings, but Klopp would bounce back during the following season.
Things changed for the German boss during the 2010-11 season, as the third meeting against LVG ended with a 2-0 win at Signal Iduna Park. Nuri Sahin's free kick was key for the yellow-and-black side, providing credibility to Klopp's project.
Later on, Borussia Dortmund walked away from Allianz Arena with all the points, thanks to a 3-1 display against Die Roten. Klopp's crew would end Bayern's dominance that year, giving their supporters a much deserved Bundesliga title, making Klopp one of the biggest threats for Bayern while coaching Dortmund.
