South Korea and Algeria will lock horns in a Group H fixture on Sunday, the 22nd of June at the Estádio Beira-Rio.

Sunday’s fixture can prove to be important in determining which team advances to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup. A win for Algeria will ensure that they can still keep battling whereas a victory for South Korea will enhance their chances of making it to the next round. The Taegeuk Warriors were lucky to escape with a point last time out during their match against Russia, when a howler from Igor Akinfeev gifted them a goal and thus allowed them to record a point.

The Asian side put up a good showing against the Russians who were firm favorites to win the match. They will now have to put a similar display against an Algerian side which performed reasonably well against Belgium in their opening fixture.

Vahid Halilhodžić’s side took the lead after a first half penalty from Sofiane Feghouli. The Desert Warriors defended valiantly from then onwards and limited the space available to Belgium players, until substitutes Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens made the difference, scoring within a span of ten minutes to deny Algeria from pulling off a shock at the expense of the Red Devils.

Despite the fact that his team played well for most part of the game, Halilhodžić claimed that Algeria was not as physically fit as the Belgian team, which ultimately resulted in his players conceding goal late in the game.

"We let them play in the second half," the 61-year-old said.

"We should have run a little bit more, we should have dared a bit more. We didn't think Belgium would score this second goal. Physically, the Belgium players are much stronger.

"My players were lacking in the second half, some of them were asking to be substituted."

According to the Yugoslavian born coach the difference in experience between the two sides also made the difference as his inexperienced side conceded two quick goals.

"The second half showed the difference in experience," he continued.

"They showed freshness, we committed small mistakes. But there was a lot of quality in our play."

"I have a number of players that are rather limited, they're young, they're not that experienced, they can’t play 90 minutes. Each Algerian player needs to improve his physical condition by 30 to 50 per cent. The Belgian players are in much better shape."

"But in spite of everything, we could have won. My team gave as much as they could in the present time."

Korea Republic and Algeria have only on one previous occasion met one another when the matched ended 2-0 in South Korea’s favor.
