It was just not the best day for Chile, and Edu Vargas' penalty kick was the final nail on La Roja's title chances.

The end of Chile's Copa América dominance saw them humiliated by Peru in more ways than you can possibly imagine after learning that La Roja lost the semi-final with a 3-0 score.

Two first-half goals by Peru (one of them after a blatant mistake by goalkeeper Gabriel Arias) and a third goal preceeded by a massive amount of passes by La Franjirroja's players seemed to be enough humiliation for the departing champions to endure. Nevertheless, one of their own would put the icing on the worst cake Chile will ever taste.

As the game neared its conclusion, striker Edu Vargas tried to save some of Chile's pride by taking a penalty awarded after the ref had a look at the replay. Tigres' footballer tried to get the ball past shot-stopper Pedro Gallese with a cheeky Panenka-style shot, but Gallese managed to get back on his feet to deflect the shot.

Vargas' miss also ended his reign as the best active striker in the South American tournament, a spot now owned by Peru's Paolo Guerrero.
