Preview

Arsenal prepare to take to the pitch in the Premier League fresh off of their disappointing draw with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, facing Aston Villa in a highly-anticipated showdown. This fixture, scheduled for Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET, will take place at the Emirates Stadium as the North London giants aim to reclaim the top spot from rivals Manchester City.

Mikel Arteta's men enter this match on the back of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal showdown with Bayern Munich on Tuesday, with Saka and Co. escaping this first-leg tie with a draw despite boasting the home advantage.

Bukayo opened the scoring for the hosts but two defensive lapses in concentration let the German giants back into the game, with former Arsenal ace Serge Gnabry and arch-enemy Harry Kane scoring before halftime.

Fortunately, Leandro Trossard came off the bench to grab the equalizer, and while the North London giants had a credible penalty shout in stoppage time, Arteta's men were unable to overcome the Bundesliga heavyweights. This means they will have to get the job done at the daunting Allianz Arena.

However, the North London giants have been nothing short of unstoppable domestically, winning all but one of the 11 top-flight matches they have played in 2024. That one slip-up was the goalless draw away to bitter rivals Manchester City, which is never a bad result.

Furthermore, the Gunners have conceded only four goals during this run, with only one — Aaron Ramsdale's blunder in goal against Brentford — coming in their last five matches. However, Arsenal have lost only four games all season and one of those defeats came against Sunday's opponent.

This occurred during a five-game period in December in which Saka and Co. won only one match. The title contenders traveled to Villa Park and suffered a 1-0 loss, with John McGinn scoring the decisive goal. Will the host get revenge over Unai Emery's men?

With Manchester City beating Luton Town 5-1 on Saturday, the Cityzens have currently gone top of the table. Meanwhile, Liverpool host Crystal Palace two and a half hours before this clash, which means Arteta's men could drop to third before kick-off, thus making Arsenal's upcoming match a must-win fixture.

Unlike Arsenal, the visitors enter this tie on the back of a positive European result. Villa were in action in the UEFA Europa Conference League quarterfinals on Thursday, facing Lille and winning 2-1 in the first leg.

This tie took place at Villa Park, with Ollie Watkins and John McGinn getting on the scoresheet. However, things could have gone horribly wrong for the Birmingham outfit had it not been for Emiliano Martinez's heroics in goals, denying the Ligue 1 side several opportunities to score.

While that result was a huge boost, things have taken a turn for the worse for Emery's side domestically. Watkins and Co. have won only once in their last five Premier League matches and while the Lions currently sit in the fourth and final UEFA Champions League spot, this is thanks to Tottenham's embarrassing 4-0 loss at Newcastle on Saturday.

Aston Villa and Spurs are tied on 60 points each, with Villa boasting a superior goal difference thanks to Tottenham's St. James' Park capitulation. Despite this, the visitors desperately need a win to boost their UEFA Champions League hopes.

Emery's side recently threw away a 2-0 lead over Brentford to draw 3-3, were held to a 1-1 stalemate at West Ham, and conceded a total of eight goals across two games against Tottenham and Manchester City. If Watkins and Co. are to escape the Emirates Stadium with something, they will need to stop leaking goals.

Team news

Arsenal: Questions have been raised about the fitness of Gabriel Magalhães, and while Arteta hinted that there might be an issue or two in his squad, the Spaniard did not clarify who and what he was referring to. Bukayo Saka, who scored on his UEFA Champions League quarterfinal debut, is expected to lead the line and will join Kai Havertz and possibly one of Gabriel Jesus or Leandro Trossard, with both impressing off the bench after a disappointing performance from Gabriel Martinelli. Jakub Kiwior also struggled on Tuesday and will likely return to the bench.

Aston Villa: Douglas Luiz is suspended for this fixture, which is a huge blow for the visitors. Tim Iroegbunam could deputize in the Brazilian's absence as Emery looks to deal with a midfield selection headache due to injuries to Boubacar Kamara and Jacob Ramsey.

Key stats

  • Not only have Arsenal won 10 of their last 11 Premier League matches, but the Gunners have scored two or more goals in all of those victories.

  • Aston Villa could pull off the double against the Gunners for only the third time in history, having achieved this feat in 1992-93 and 2020-21.

  • The North London giants have won five of their last six home clashes with the Lions, with the sole exception being a 3-0 loss in 2020.

  • Unai Emery's men are unbeaten in their last nine trips to London (W6, D3).

  • Aston Villa have lost every single away game against last season's top-four teams (4-1 at Man City, 3-2 at Man United, and 5-1 at Newcastle).
