Preview

Inter Miami resume their MLS pursuit after a rough week for the MLS franchise, with Messi and Co. traveling to Arrowhead Stadium for an interesting showdown with Sporting Kansas City. This tie, scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, is a must-win game for the hosts as they aim to return to winning ways away to the Western Conference's seventh-placed team.

Tata Martino's side enter this clash on the back of a rough spell, with the Herons failing to win a single match in three weeks. This winless run coincided with Lionel Messi's absence through injury but even the return of the Argentine icon could not save Inter Miami in their most recent fixture, with the MLS outfit suffering a frustrating defeat away to Monterrey.

The Florida-based club visited the Liga MX side for the second leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal showdown with the sole goal of overturning the 2-1 deficit from the first leg. Unfortunately, Messi and Co. failed to do this, instead losing 3-1 (5-2 on aggregate).

Goals from Brandon Vazquez, German Berterame, and Jesus Gallardo condemned Inter Miami to their CONCACAF Champions Cup exit. Diego Gomez scored a consolation goal in the 85th minute but Jordi Alba's sending off capped what was already an embarrassing day for the Eastern Conference team.

That was merely one in a host of several disappointing results for the star-studded MLS team. To put this into perspective, Tata Martino's men have won none of their last five matches, drawing twice while losing three during this run.

Despite this, the visitors still remain third in the Eastern Conference. While they have played more games than any other side in their conference, having played eight times while others have played six or seven matches, Inter Miami are only two points behind leaders New York Red Bulls.

Sporting Kansas City, meanwhile, are seventh in the Western Conference and are only two points away from dropping out of a Final Series spot. Austin FC and Colorado Rapids. Despite this, form favors the home side.

Unlike the visitors, the Wizards have won a handful of matches in their last five outings — two, to be precise. This includes victories over SJ Earthquakes in mid-March and a 3-1 triumph over Toronto roughly two weeks ago.

Additionally, Peter Vermes's side do not enter this clash on the back of a defeat. In their last outing, Sporting KC drew 3-3 at home to Portland Timbers but despite picking up a point, it was still a crushing result for 2013 MLS Cup winners as they threw away a three-goal lead in embarrassing fashion.

The Wizards went 3-0 up in the first half but suffered a second-half capitulation after conceding three times in less than 20 minutes following the hour mark.

That result leaves Sporting Kansas City with the fifth joint-worst defensive record among the top-half teams in the Western Conference. On the flip side, only four teams have outscored them across both conferences, which is a huge boost ahead of what should be a tricky tie.

Team news

Sporting KC: Khiry Shelton is unavailable due to an ankle injury while Johnny Russell is out due to a hamstring issue. Logan Ndenbe continues his recovery from his ACL tear but Andreu Fontas could return for the home side.

Inter Miami: Lionel Messi made his first start in Wednesday's defeat against Monterrey and completed a full 90 minutes. Furthermore, Benjamin Cremaschi is edging closer to a return to the pitch while Jordi Alba will be in contention for this tie despite his red card — his suspension is not valid in the MLS. Unfortunately, Serhiy Kryvtsov is unavailable for the visitors.
