The Cityzens host Unai Emery's men with the sole goal of returning to winning ways. However, things did not end well for Guardiola's side when they last met the Lions.

Preview

Manchester City are back in Premier League action this midweek, with the reigning champions hosting Aston Villa in what should be a tricky top-flight showdown. This is the Cityzens first game since their frustrating goalless draw at home to fellow title challengers Arsenal and will thus be keen on returning to winning ways when Unai Emery's men visit the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's men are currently third in the table and while only a single point separates them from Arsenal, the Cityzens are three behind current leaders and bitter rivals Liverpool. Furthermore, the Gunners and the Merseyside giants will also be in action this midweek, and given who they will be facing, City's showdown with Aston Villa is a must-win tie.

Arteta's men take to the pitch 45 minutes before Haaland and Co. to face relegation-battling Luton Town while Klopp's side host bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United on Thursday. Both teams are expected to win their fixtures but the treble winners should face a tricky test despite their home advantage against Villa.

The home side boast an outstanding 23-game unbeaten streak but interestingly, the last team to get the better of the Cityzens was Aston Villa, with the Manchester giants losing 1-0 in Birmingham thanks to a Leon Bailey goal.

Additionally, this is the start of a tricky period for Manchester City, with Guardiola's men visiting Crystal Palace in the league and Real Madrid for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal battle straight after Wednesday's tie.

Between mid to late April, the Cityzens will face Real Madrid at home before locking horns with Tottenham, Chelsea, and Brighton in successive matches. The title run-in is underway, and with Manchester City fighting for the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and FA Cup, they cannot afford any slip-up between now and the end of the season.

Aston Villa, meanwhile, are locked in an interesting battle of their own. With Unai Emery's men sitting fourth in the table but facing competition from fifth-placed Tottenham and even sixth-placed Manchester United, the Lions are facing a tough battle to secure UEFA Champions League football next season.

Finishing in the top four with be a spectacular achievement for Emery's side, who are currently competing in the UEFA Europa Conference League — the Claret and Blue are through to the quarterfinals where they will face Lille.

Emery's men endured a rough patch in the league, starting with their embarrassing 4-0 loss at home to nearest top-four rivals Tottenham before subsequently drawing 1-1 away to West Ham. However, the visitors have since returned to winning ways, beating Wolves 2-0 over the weekend.

Moussa Diaby, who was recently called up to the French national team, broke the deadlock with a lovely goal in the 36th minute before Ezri Konsa, who was called up to the English national team during the recent international break, doubled their lead 30 minutes later.

Aston Villa have already beaten Manchester City once this season and while the visitors will sadly be without influential striker Ollie Watkins for this tie, the Lions desperately need the three points. Manchester United, who are 11 points behind, face Chelsea this midweek while Tottenham, who are only two points behind, were held to a 1-1 draw at West Ham on Tuesday. As a result, Villa have a golden opportunity to pull ahead of their top-four rivals with a win at the Etihad Stadium.

Team news

Manchester City: The hosts are without a few key players, namely Ederson, who suffered an injury in the 1-1 draw at Anfield, and Kyle Walker, who picked up a leg muscle issue during the international break. Nathan Ake also suffered an unspecified issue during the draw with Arsenal and was forced off early, with Guardiola later revealing that the Dutchman will be sidelined for "longer than hoped".

Aston Villa: The visitors will be without Ollie Watkins, which is a huge blow, after picking up a hamstring issue in the victory over Wolves. The English striker thus joins Tyrone Mings, Boubacar Kamara, Emiliano Buendia, and Matty Cash on the sidelines. Meanwhile, Jacob Ramsey has not fully recovered from his ankle issue and will thus sit this one out.
