Sunday's Le Classique between PSG and Marseille sparked further controversy at the Stade Vélodrome, with Luis Enrique shocking everyone by taking off star attack Kylian Mbappe in the 65th minute of the game when the score line was only 1-0.
And to make things worse, the Frenchman, who was understandably displeased to come off, allegedly insulted the Spanish manager. The club's all-time top scorer could be seen muttering something as he walked off the pitch, with many accusing him of saying "son of a b***h" in French.
Fortunately, the Ligue 1 leaders went on to win the game 2-0 despite being a man down, thus maintaining their 12-point lead at the top. However, the Mbappe debacle has not disappeared, with Luis Enrique now addressing the issue.
The Spanish tactician addressed the allegation ahead of Wednesday's Coupe de France semifinal showdown with Rennes, refuting the claim that Mbappe insulted him while hailing his attitude both on and off the pitch.
"What's curious is everything that's being said based on a piece of false news," Enrique said, as per Goal.
"Someone has invented an insult and then from that comes all kinds of speculations. I'm taking it all in my stride. I'm very happy with all my players, Kylian included, he's always behaved admirably."
Regardless, this is unlikely to close the door on this chapter. Despite the victory, Mbappe, who was the captain for that game, did not post a celebratory picture on Instagram. Instead, the Real Madrid-bound attacker made a cryptic post, hinting at frustration over what occurred.
The club will want to move on from this rapidly as their highly-anticipated UEFA Champions League quarterfinal showdown with Barcelona is fast approaching. PSG host the Catalan giants in the first leg in just over a week and will need Mbappe happy and firing for that tie.
