Brazil along with the 31 nations that qualified for the World Cup will have their fingers crossed as they await their fate, with the draws for the illustrious tournament to be held in Costa do Sauipe on Friday.

A host of celebrities are expected to be at the venue with Brazilian actors Fernanda Lima and Rodrigo Hilbert lined up to host the show. Football legends Sir Geoff Hurst, Zinedine Zidane, Cafu and Fabio Cannavaro will have the task of plucking out the balls which will decide the destiny of every participating nation.

The draw will be conducted in the same manner it has been for a number of decades. The 32 teams who have qualified for the World Cup finals will be divided into eight groups labelled A-H. Each section will consist of four teams.

Seeded and Unseeded teams

Hosts Brazil along with Spain, Germany, Argentina, Colombia, Belgium, Uruguay and Switzerland have been seeded for the draws on the 6th of December based on their FIFA rankings. All of these nations have been placed in Pot A as top seeds. Other pools were formed on a geographical basis to ensure that there is a diverse set of nations in each group.

The Pots

The Final Draw pots as presented on FIFA.com

  • Pot 4 consists entirely of European nations and has nine teams whereas Pot 2 has only seven.

  • At the beginning of the draw one team at random will be picked up from Pot 4 and placed in Pot 2 in order to ensure that each pool has an equal number of teams.

Rules

  • Teams from the same confederation cannot be drawn in the same group.

  • The only exception to the above rule applies to European teams due to the high number of UEFA representatives at the World Cup. That said, four to five groups will have a maximum of two European teams.

  • The European team which will be placed in Pot 2 will be automatically drawn against the South American team from Pot 1.

  • Teams in the top pot will be assigned slots A1-H1 in the draw and fixture template

  • However teams in the remaining pots will have their positions in the template decided at random. For example, a team from Pot 3 drawn into Group A can take the position A2, A3 or A4.

Group stage possibilities

Uruguay vs Netherlands

Two teams consisting of some of the finest attacking talents might go head to head on the biggest stage. All eyes will be especially on Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez who have both taken the Premier League by storm and will be hoping for similar performances in the biggest tournament of their respective careers.

Ronaldo vs Messi

The biggest individual rivalry currently could take centre stage in the first round of the biggest football event. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are arguably the two finest players to have graced La Liga in the past decade, but both have failed to land legendary achievements with their respective national side.

With Lionel Messi’s Argentina in Pot 1 and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in Pot 4, it will be a dream for any neutral to have the two countries paired in the group stages.

Group of Death

The possibilities are endless for high profile teams to be placed against one another in a group which could be referred to as the ‘group of death’.

For unseeded teams in Pot 4 such as England and France, prospects are even higher. One team at random from Pot 4 will be placed in Pot 2 which implies that this particular team will have no chance of being drawn against the weakest seeds - Europe's Switzerland and Belgium.

Instead, the unlucky chosen one will have to face one of the top four South American teams as well as another European team which could include the likes of Italy or Holland.
