What is the record of the teams at the AFCON?
Morocco
Morocco will be making its 17th appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt this summer. The Atlas Lions' most recognizable feat in the tournament was winning the 1976 edition. Since then, they have finished as runners-up and second-runners up on one occasion apiece and have ended up in fourth place on two occasions.
Namibia
Namibia will be making only its third appearance at the Africa championship this year. The Brave Warriors first qualified to feature in the finals in the 1998 edition hosted in Burkina Faso. Their second appearance was in Ghana 2008.
Namibia was eliminated in the group stage on both occasions.
South Africa
The Bafana Bafana's biggest-ever achievement in the Africa Cup of Nations was hosting and winning the 1996 title. Two years later, they almost added another but finished as runners-up in Burkina.
This was followed by a third-place finish in 2000. South Africa has qualified for the African championship on 10 occasions.
Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast has qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations a staggering 23 times. The Elephants have been champions on just two occasions although they have reached the quarter-finals in six of the last seven editions of the tournament.
They have finished as runners-up on two occasions, in third place on four occasions and in the fourth-place on two occasions as well.
Who are the favorites to progress out of Group D?
Ivory Coast comes into the tournament with one of the most talented squads and glance at their adversaries suggests that progression should be locked for the Elephants. Relatively, Morocco is also a formidable side with a lot of potential to go far at this year's tournament.
That withstanding, it is quite hard to see South Africa - who only secured a spot at the competition with a final-matchday victory against Libya - and Namibia - who will be making only a third outing at the AFCON - upset the odds against two of the big names.
Who are the key players to watch in Group D?
-
Hakim Ziyech (Morocco)
-
Nicolas Pepe (Ivory Coast)
-
Ibrahim Sangare (Ivory Coast)
