Matchday 11 in Major League Soccer is here, with Inter Miami taking to the pitch in one of 14 fixtures scheduled for Saturday. Lionel Messi's side visit New England Revolution for their 7:30 p.m. ET showdown (live exclusively on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV) as the visitors look to strengthen their grip on the top spot while the hosts are keen on turning their fortunes around.

Inter Miami, the current Eastern Conference leaders, enter this fixture having regained form following a five-game wobble between late March and mid-April. This stretch saw them go five matches without a win, losing three games, including back-to-back encounters with Monterrey in the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal.

The Herons lost both home and away to the Liga MX side and thus bowed out of the competition, leaving the MLS as Inter Miami's only obligation in the meantime.

Fortunately, Messi and Co. have bounced back since that elimination, with Tata Martino's men winning the two consecutive fixtures that succeeded their Monterrey battle.

First came the 3-2 victory over Sporting Kansas City, with Messi scoring once and assisting another goal to inspire this comeback victory. Inter Miami then faced Nashville in a repeat of the 2023 Leagues Cup final, with the club's eight-time Ballon d'Or winner playing an influential role once more.

This time the Argentine icon scored a brace to inspire another comeback, with his team going 1-0 down after only two minutes to win 3-1. La Pulga grabbed the equalizer in the 11th minute and completed his brace in the 81st minute, with fellow Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets also getting on the scoresheet.

Thanks to that result, the Herons maintain their grip on the no,1 spot in the Eastern Conference. However, the visitors are only two points ahead of their nearest rivals the New York Red Bulls, thus making Saturday's trip to Gillette Stadium a must-win tie for the away side.

While Inter Miami are top of the Eastern Conference and one of the early favorites for the Supporters' Shield, New England Revolution find themselves on the opposite end of the table.

Despite appointing Caleb Porter, a man who has won the MLS Cup with two different clubs, as manager, the Revs have started the 2024 campaign in the worst possible fashion.

The hosts have played only eight matches so far but have lost a whopping six times already, with their sole win this season coming earlier this month when they beat Charlotte 1-0.

Not only that but the New England Revolution boast one of the worst defenses in the East and are the worst attacking side in their conference, scoring only five goals all season.

Porter's side have lost their last two MLS fixtures without scoring once, going 2-0 and 1-0 down away to New York City and Toronto, respectively. Furthermore, New England suffered a more humiliating CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinal exit than their opponent, losing 9-2 on aggregate to Liga MX powerhouse Club America.

One thing should be noted, however: with the season being this early, Carles Gil and Co. are not yet out of the race for an MLS Cup ticket. However, New England will need to start winning games as soon as possible if they wish to remain in contention, starting with Saturday's showdown with Inter Miami.

Team news

New England: Brandon Bye and Dylan Borrero are long-term absentees while Jonathan Mensah, DeJuan Jones, and Tommy McNamara are all unavailable for this tie as well.

Inter Miami: The visitors are without Jordi Alba, Serhiy Kryvtsov, Robert Taylor, and Leonardo Campana. Meanwhile, Ian Fray continues his recovery from an ACL injury and will remain on the sidelines for a lengthy spell. Facundo Farias, Federico Redondo, Diego Gomez, and Robbie Robinson are also injured.

Key stats

  • This will be the seventh MLS encounter between these two clubs.

  • The head-to-head record is currently equal, with both sides winning three encounters each.

  • New England are currently on their worst start in history to an MLS season.

  • With 15 goals conceded, the Herons have the joint-worst defense of any team currently sitting in a playoff spot.
