The Madrid Debry will differ from previous editions of the UEFA Super Cup

The UEFA Super Cup is right around the corner and with it comes an interesting clash between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid. While Wednesday's clash will not starkly differ from the previous editions, European football's governing body has introduced a few rule changes to this competition.

The first is the introduction of a fourth substitute should the game go into extra-time. This rule made its World Cup debut in Russia 2018 and will be included in the upcoming Champions League and Europa League season, but the Super Cup will award an additional substitution in added time before those two competitions.

Secondly, there will be an increase in the number of players on the bench for this tie. Previously, only seven substitutes could be named for the UEFA Super Cup, but that number has been increased to 12 ahead of the clash in Tallinn.

Finally, electronic communication has been permitted in the dugouts by UEFA. However, only handheld devices such as smart phones are accepted for now.

VAR advocates will be disappointed, as Video Assistant Referee has not been given the green light for the 2018 edition. This means Polish match official Szymon Marciniak will not be able to rely on technology to review controversial decisions like referees did at the summer World Cup.

As for the game itself, both Los Blancos and Los Rojiblancos should be ready. Lopetegui's side will be keen on winning this title for a third straight year while Simeone will hope to avenge the two Champions League final defeats he suffered at the hands of Real Madrid.
