Match Facts & Stats

  • This is Senegal's second ever appearance at a World Cup

  • Meanwhile, Japan are appearing at the tournament for the sixth time
  • Interestingly, the Samurai Blue have alternated between group stage and round of 16 exits since making their debut in 1998
  • The 2014 tournament saw them bow out in the group stage, while in 2010 they made it to the round of 16
  • Only two African nations have ever won both of their opening two matches to a World Cup tournament — Cameroon in 1990 and Nigeria in 1998
  • No Asian nation has ever won both of its opening two games at a World Cup tournament
  • Meanwhile, Japan hasn't won consecutive games at a World Cup since 2002
  • They beat Russia and Tunisia in their second and third games

Preview

Despite being in the most balanced quartet at this summer's World Cup, there were those who didn't give Japan much chance to get out of their group. Senegal were also viewed as slight underdogs, meaning that many people expected the top two spots to go to Colombia and Poland.

Well, they were wrong. For starters, Senegal earned a deserved 2-1 win over Poland, while shutting down their star man Robert Lewandowski. Although their key striker Sadio Mane didn't get on the score-sheet, he proved to be a handful for Poland's defenders and will be one that Japan will need to keep an eye on if they want to avoid dropping points.

Interestingly, Japan, who are making their sixth straight World Cup appearance, have alternated between a group stage exit and qualifying for the round of 16 since making their debut in 1998. If one believes in patterns, then the Samurai Blue should be joining the likes of Uruguay, France, Croatia, and Russia in the round of 16 this summer.

Having already beaten Colombia, they'll be naturally hoping to book their ticket and edge out their tricky opponents. Should they achieve this, they will make history, as no Asian side has ever won their first two games at a World Cup.

Senegal, for their part, made an impressive run to the quarter-finals in their only other World Cup appearance back in 2002. It's been smooth sailing so far for Aliou Cisse - who was in that famous squad 12 years ago - and they're aiming to join both Cameroon and Nigeria as the only African side to win their first two games at a World Cup.
