Preview
Qatar will hope to add to their remarkable unbeaten run when they clash with El Salvador for a place in the semi-finals of the Gold Cup on Saturday. The Maroon, who are competing as a guest team, have proved to be a force to reckon with as they are yet to be on the wrong end on any scoreline in the competition so far. Felix Sanchez's men emerged as winners of Group D, recording wins over Grenada and Honduras after being held to a 3-3 draw against Panama.
With the results, Qatar extended its unbeaten run across all competitions to 11, with their last defeat coming against South Korea in a friendly encounter that ended 2-1 in favor of the latter. Nine of the 11 games they have featured in have ended in wins with the remaining two being draws. Against El Salvador, the 2022 World Cup hosts will hope to get a step closer to becoming the first invited nation to the finals to clinch the trophy. Having conceded goals in only three of the 11 games they have gone through unbeaten, it will take some doing for the Maroons to fall against their opponents.
On the contrary, El Salvador should be confident to put the Asian Cup champions through their paces considering how well they have fared. After failing to make it out of the group stage in two of their last three appearances before the current edition of the Gold Cup, Hugo Perez guided La Selecta to finish second in Group A. They first defeated Guatemala and Trinidad and Tobago before losing 1-0 to Mexico in their final match of the group opening round.
Prior to the commencement of the tournament, they had failed to pick up a win in three successive games. With their form now looking respectable, the will look to build on it and end the 11-game unbeaten run of Qatar. The clash will also present them the opportunity to avenge the 1-0 defeat they suffered against the 2022 World Cup hosts when the two sides met in a friendly while preparing for the ongoing finals.
