Ligue 1 History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
Ligue 1 vormt de topklasse van het professionele mannenvoetbal in Frankrijk. Na de oprichting in 1930, begonnen ze in 1932 te spelen onder de naam 'National', waarna de naam het volgende jaar gewijzigd werd naar 'Division 1'. In 2002 werd de naam opnieuw veranderd, ditmaal naar 'Ligue 1'. Sinds 1944 is de 'Ligue de Football Professionnel' (LFP) het organiserende orgaan van Ligue 1.
Net als bij vele andere Europese competities en die over de hele wereld, hanteert Ligue 1 een promotie-degradatiestelsel. Het seizoen 2023/24 bracht enkele veranderingen in de structuur van de competitie met zich mee - met name de vermindering van het aantal teams van 20 naar 18. Over het algemeen begint het seizoen in augustus en eindigt het in mei, waarbij elk team twee keer speelt (zowel thuis als uit).
Gebaseerd op de huidige UEFA-coëfficiënt van Ligue 1, worden er doorgaans vijf plaatsen toegewezen voor Ligue 1-teams in UEFA Club-competities. De winnaar en de nummer twee kwalificeren zich direct voor de UEFA Champions League, terwijl het team dat als derde eindigt, een plek in de kwalificatieronden veiligstelt. De teams die op de vierde en vijfde plaats eindigen, kwalificeren zich respectievelijk voor de UEFA Europa League en de UEFA Europa Conference League.
Bovendien, de winnaar van de Coupe de France verdient ook een plaats in de UEFA Europa League. Afhankelijk van de positie van dat team kan Ligue 1 soms tot wel zes teams in Europa hebben, vooral als de winnaar van de Coupe de France al in aanmerking was gekomen voor de UEFA Europa League op basis van hun positie in de competitie.
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) behoort, naast Saint-Etienne, Olympique de Marseille (Marseille), Monaco, Nantes en Olympique Lyonnais (Lyon), tot de meest succesvolle teams in de geschiedenis van Ligue 1.
Canal+ is sinds 1986 de hoofd-uitzender van Ligue 1 in Frankrijk. In 1995 wist TF1 ook de uitzendrechten op Ligue 1 te bemachtigen, voordat Bein Sports later in de jaren 2010 de rechten overnam om wedstrijden op televisie te tonen en online uit te zenden. In de jaren 2020 verkreeg Amazon Prime Video als nieuwste partij de live-streaming-rechten voor Ligue 1-wedstrijden.
In de VS is Bein Sports sinds 2011 de primaire aanbieder van tv-uitzendingen en live-streaming verslaggeving van Ligue 1-wedstrijden. Aanvullende live-streaming providers die Bein Sports aanbieden, zijn FuboTV, Fanatiz en Sling TV.
