Goran Stevanovic has become Ghana’s new coach. The Serbian’s first friendly match in charge will be the much-anticipated England vs Ghana game on March 29.
A statement from the GFA read:

“The Ghana Football Association have appointed a new coach for the Black Stars. He is in the person of Goran Stevanovic.

“We have successfully negotiated with the coach and he would replace his compatriot, Milovan Rajevac.

“The coach will be presented to the public at a press conference at the GFA on Wednesday, 12 January 2011 at 10:00am.”

Goran Stevanovic is now Ghana’s 4th Serbian coach. His CV includes a UEFA Pro Licence coaching qualification and a Serbian League and FA Cup title too with Partizan Belgrade among other achievements.

The 44-year-old man, who was Serbia & Montenegro’s assistant coach during the 2006 World Cup before managing Partizan comes after Milan Zivadinovic, Ratomir Dujkovic and Milovan Rajevac in the respective order. Last summer, Milovan Rajevac reportedly declined the GFA’s offer to renew his contract after he successfully led the country to their second consecutive World Cup tournament where they were inches away from reaching the 2010 World Cup semi-finals.

Ghana’s first ever World Cup qualification had occurred a few years back as Serbian coach Ratomir Dujkovic made the Black Stars’ dream come true despite all the criticism that surrounded him. With Dujkovic, then-debutants Ghana crossed the group stages of the 2006 World Cup only to fall against Brazil in the Last 16 in a match that was hit by match-fixing allegations.

Goran Stevanovic will hope to go further than his Serbian predecessors as the manager of Ghana’s national football team. In his first test, Stevanovic will have to lead Ghana against Congo in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in 2 months' time. But the match that will draw him the most attention is the England vs Ghana friendly which is set to take place at the Wembley Stadium come March 29, 2011.

For the first time, England and Ghana will be meeting at the senior level and the Three Lions will be keen not to fall against the Black Stars’ blinding light like England’s U-20 team did when Ghana’s U-20 side defeated them 4-0 en route to FIFA U-20 World Cup glory back in 2009.

There were a whole lot of issues concerning support and criticism during Ratomir Dujkovic and Milovan Rajevac's time. How will the story between Goran Stevanovic and Ghana's national football team unfold? How will the England vs Ghana match - although "just" a friendly - affect the Serbian's career and the Ghanaians' pride? As of January 11, Ghana are only 10 places (16th actually) below England in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking.
