Both Roma and Napoli will be hoping for a much needed win as they lock horns in their penultimate Serie A match of 2023.

Consistency is something that has generally eluded Roma this season, especially in Serie A. Although the Giallorossi had a solid Europa League campaign, with just one loss from their six group stage games to finish as runners-up in their group, Jose Mourinho's men have not had the easiest time in the league. Roma, who will take on reigning Scudetto champions Napoli in the latest installment of the Derby del Sole on Saturday, come into this match off the back of a very poor result in Serie A  after seemingly turning a corner.

Prior to their shock 2-0 loss to Bologna, Roma had strung together a series of solid results, picking up three wins and two draws to make it five games unbeaten. Although some of those wins, especially over minnows like Lecce, Udinese, and Sassuolo, were expected results given the gulf in class between the Giallorossi and their opponents, they nonetheless were absolutely crucial to keep the Lupi in the hunt for a European football spot next season. At the moment, although Roma sit in eighth place, they are only three points away from fourth spot, which is occupied by Bologna after that team's surprisingly good start to the season.

Meanwhile, Napoli's title defense has not gone to plan. Rudi Garcia was sacked in November, with former boss Walter Mazzarri was brought back in as the Partenopei desperately sought to turn things around after a poor start. Unfortunately, so far, his return has not sparked the turnaround that fans have hoped. Although Napoli do come into this game having beaten Cagliari 2-1 in Serie A - a much needed result following back to back losses to Inter and Juventus - they were shockingly dumped out of the Coppa Italia after a humiliating 4-0 loss to minnows Frosinone. Mazzarri did heavily rotate his squad for that match, but it ultimately backfired horribly, which means that there is one less trophy for Napoli to potentially win this season.

The reigning Scudetto champions sit in fifth place and are a whopping 14 points behind Inter, which means that winning the league is increasingly looking like a foregone conclusion. Still, Napoli will hope that their good record against Roma - which has seen them not lose to the Lupi since 2019 - could give them a slight boost as they, too, are certainly seeking to secure at least a top four finish to feature in the Champions League next season.
