Vasco da Gama reach the quarter-finals of the competition after hitting Aurora for eight.
Vasco da Gama, the Brazilian league leaders, progressed to the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana, after thrashing Aurora of Bolivia 8-3 in an extremely entertaining clash in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday. Vasco were made to sweat against the hard-working Bolivians, but after a couple of set-backs they ended up winning the tie convincingly.

Having won the Copa do Brasil earlier on in the year, and with the Brazilian championship and the Copa Sudamericana in touching distance Vasco are still on track for what would be a historic treble, a feat never to have been achieved by the club.

It wasn't all good news for Brazilian clubs however, as Flamengo, Botafogo and Sao Paulo were all sent crashing out. Independiente Santa Fe, Universidad de Chile and Libertad were the other three sides who booked their tickets to the quarter-finals of the competition this week.

Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia cruised into the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana after thrashing Botafogo of Brazil 4-1 at the Nemesio Camacho stadium in Bogota on Tuesday. With a 5-2 aggregate score over the two legs, the Colombians will do battle with Argentine club Velez Sarsfield in the following phase of the competition.

Santa Fe went ahead as early as in the second minute, when Oscar Rodas received a great ball from Omar Bravo and beat Botafogo goalkeeper Jefferson with an easy finish. Six minutes later it was Bravo himself who doubled Santa Fe's lead after meeting a ball from Jonathan Copete.

Botafogo picked up their game towards the end of the half, creating several clear-cut opportunities to pull a goal back, however, on the stroke of half-time Santa Fe broke on a swift counterattack, Rodas sent a cross into the area and Botafogo's Leo pushed the ball into his own goal.

Rodas, clearly the man-of-the-match, fired in his second goal and Santa Fe's fourth of the match in the 62nd minute, to the joy of the strong 35,000 crowd.

Botafogo were down and out, however, Alex Oliveira had time to score a consolation goal four minutes from full-time when he beat Camilo Vargas with a powerful shot that went in off the post.

Vasco da Gama advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition after overturning a 3-1 deficit to beat Aurora of Bolivia 8-3 in an incredible match played at the Sao Januario stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Vasco will meet Universitario de Deportes of Peru in the following stage of the Copa Sudamericana.

Vasco's goals were scored by Bernardo and Alecsandro, twice each, and by Leandro, Douglas, Allan and Juninho Pernambucano, who converted a penalty kick and gave two assists.

After going into the break with a 3-1 advantage that leveled the tie, Vasco scored twice more to give themselves a healthy lead in the second half. However, Aurora pulled a goal back, giving them a life-line as it meant that if they would have scored once more they would have gone through instead of the Brazilians. But their luck lasted shortly, as in the space of ten minutes Vasco restored their advantage with two more goals.

Aurora pulled another goal back late on, but in second half injury-time Vasco scored their eighth goal of the night to cap off a sensational display that sent them through to the final eight.

Although they didn't replicate their performance from last week, when they thrashed Flamengo 4-0 in Rio de Janeiro, Universidad de Chile qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament, this time beating the Brazilians 1-0 in Santiago courtesy of a first-half strike from Marcelo Diaz. Universidad will meet Arsenal de Sarandi of Argentina in the quarter-finals of the competition.

Flamengo, who fielded a side made up of reserves in order to keep their starters fresh to confront the Brazilian championship, needed to score early in order to have any possibilities of remaining in the tie. However, in the 22nd minute Diaz put the Chileans ahead with a brilliant left-footed drive from outside of the area, that all but sealed the tie in favour of La 'U'.

Despite the goal Flamengo went looking to draw the game level, and came close to doing so through Willians, but his powerful shot flew wide of the Universidad goal.

In the second period Universidad controlled the flow of the game, but at a much slower pace when compared to that of the first half. Flamengo tried to force a draw late on, however, like in the first leg they lacked conviction in their attack.

Libertad of Paraguay qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa Sudamericana, after defeating Sao Paulo of Brazil 2-0, the result they needed after having lost 1-0 in the first leg of the tie last week.

Libertad's goals were scored by Sergio Aquino in the first half and by Jose Nunez in the second. With the result the Paraguayans will meet Liga de Quito of Ecuador in an enticing quarter-final match-up.

Having started strongly, Libertad went ahead in the 9th minute when Aquino converted a penalty kick. Two minutes later Sao Paulo almost drew level, however, a shot from Paraguayan defender Ivan Piris hit Bernardo Medina's right post.

Sao Paulo, who saw the debut of Emerson Leao as coach, piled heavy pressure on the Paraguayan goal, but with little luck, as they couldn't seem to beat an inspired Medina between the Libertad posts.

In the 67th minute Nunez scored Libertad's second goal, which ended up deciding the outcome of the series in favour of the Paraguayans.
