Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger has renewed the hopes of the club’s most optimistic fans by stating that the Gunners were willing to “fight until the last second of the season” to survive.
The North Londoners lost three good opportunities in the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, and the Carling Cup. They were eliminated at European level by Spanish giants FC Barcelona in the Round of 16, while Manchester United and Birmingham City took the task of finishing them off in the United Kingdom’s second and third most prominent domestic football competitions.

Birmingham sarcastically defeated Arsenal 2-1 in the Carling Cup final on February 27 at the Wembley Stadium, whereas the Red Devils overpowered the Gunners 2-0 in the FA Cup’s quarterfinals on March 12—just four days after Arsenal’s controversial exit from the Champions League. The Barclays Premier League has also failed to bring satisfaction to the dwellers of the Emirates Stadium, who currently sit in the third position of the standings.

With only four matchdays left to go, Arsenal are three points behind their city rivals Chelsea with 64 points, and their dreams of winning the league title can now be considered dead, in view of Manchester United’s promising 6-point lead at the top of the table. It is literally acceptable to think that the Gunners’ chances of lifting the Premier League title for the first time since 2004 are over, but Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger prefers to remain positive in search of the best conclusion.

"We have to look back and we have to look in front, because even if there is a minimal chance, we have to fight for it,” he asserted. “We promised ourselves to fight until the last second of the season...

“No matter what happens... That is what we want to do now, and you never know.”

So, knowing that nothing is mathematically over yet, Arsenal’s prime goal at present is to go through the remainder of their season on perfect grounds. Nevertheless, perfection on their side will still not be enough, if Chelsea—and especially if the Red Devils—refuse to be stunned over and over again to pave the way for the devastated Gunners.

Arsenal vs Manchester United is the Premier League’s hottest fixture this weekend, and it will eventually determine whether the Londoners are still eligible to run for the title or not. At this point, one might think that there is still much to change in the Gunners’ style of play before aiming for prizes, but Wenger has shown no readiness in modifying his techniques and policies at the club in the very near future.

Although he admitted that Arsenal players “still lack maturity, experience and calm in important situations”, he affirmed that his boys had the quality, and stressed: “I think if something is wrong in our team, it is not the principles in playing our football."
