The explosive striker faces stiff competition to earn himself a place in Napoli's starting eleven.
Chilean attacker Eduardo Vargas arrived in Italy on Thursday to incorporate himself into his new club Napoli, who signed him from Universidad de Chile for $14.8 million.

A few hundred fans greeted the player upon his arrival at the Fiumicino airport, where Vargas briefly signed some first autographs. The nippy striker intends to make a name for himself at Napoli and in the Italian Serie A. The player expressed his delight to have made the move to one of Europe's toughest leagues.

"I'm happy, really happy, to be here in Italy," said Vargas, who will receive a salary of $1.4 million per year.

The 22-year-old is expected to join his new team-mates on Friday, and he could make his Napoli debut next Thursday in the Coppa Italia clash with Cesena.

Much is expected of Vargas at Napoli, after he played a key role as Universidad de Chile won back-to-back league championships in 2011 with the Apertura and Clausura titles.

He also finished as the top scorer of the competition, as the Chilean giants lifted the first international title of their entire history with the Copa Sudamericana in December. Vargas scored three times as his side crushed Liga de Quito of Ecuador 4-0 in the two legged final.

But despite his undisputed quality, Vargas will have to be in top form in order to earn himself a place in Napoli's attack, as they already count with the services of two lethal strikers in Edinson Cavani of Uruguay and Ezequiel Lavezzi of Argentina.

Napoli currently find themselves in sixth position of Serie A. They reached the round of 16 stage of the UEFA Champions League, where they will meet Chelsea of England in February.
