What makes a player a legend? Is it scoring goals for fun, winning trophies, or breaking records? If it’s all of the above, then there is no denying that Cristiano Ronaldo is an icon.
Spanish news outlet Marca held a poll in which they asked their readers to name the player who they believe is the greatest in Real Madrid history. Although several great names have come and gone at the Bernabeu, the Portuguese won.
The four-time Ballon d’Or winner beat out club legends Alfredo Di Stefano and Raul, coming in first with 56% of the vote. That means over half of Marca’s readers believe the 31-year-old is the best player in their long, trophy-ladden history.
Di Stefano came in second, picking up only 18% of the votes. The late Argentine was followed by current manager Zinedine Zidane, who came in third with 14% of the votes. Raul, Iker Casillas and Paco Gento picked up less than 10%.
This comes as little surprise, as Cristiano is the club’s top-scorer in all competitions, in La Liga, and in a single season.
