Newly-crowned Carling Cup winners Liverpool were stunned by Arsenal on Saturday. Only few may disagree with Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez’s opinion that the Reds deserved to lose.
Liverpool succumbed to an embarrassing 2-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon. Laurent Koscielny offered them the lead through an own-goal midway through the first half.

Arsenal seemed to lack spirit during the game but hero Robin van Persie had the final word. The Dutch striker put the Gunners on equal terms before the break. He completed his brace in the 92nd minute to steal everything away from Liverpool.

“It means a lot to score at Anfield, it’s big. It’s a massive ground,” goal scorer Robin van Persie told reporters after the match.

“I’m proud of that but even more proud of this win. I don’t think we deserved it. Liverpool played better but to nick it like we did we can only be pleased.

“I think we are 10 points ahead of Liverpool now and we can just wait and see what Spurs do tomorrow against Man Utd. So it’s a massive win.”

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who won a penalty which Dirk Kuyt eventually squandered, also left the following note on his Twitter account:

“What an unfair defeat! We did all our best to win the game but we lost at the very end... Come on! We can do it!! YNWA.”

Liverpool may have to settle for an UEFA Europa League spot. Only a miraculous comeback in the final stages of the English Premier League season would see them overthrow Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Chelsea or even the Magpies of Newcastle.
