On Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham will lock horns in the Champions League. A top side was destined to drop out in the first round in this group, as the German and English clubs were paired with defending champion Real Madrid.
With Spurs sitting in the top spot, and Los Blancos in second, it is the Bundesliga outfit facing an early exit. Peter Bosz’s side sits in third with only two points, five points behind Los Blancos and eight behind Pochettino’s crew.
BVB must win their home clash with the North London side and hope Real Madrid slips up against APOEL in order to avoid a group stage exit. However, the stats don’t favor this happening.
Despite having lost only one game against a Premier League side at the Signal Iduna Park, against Arsenal in the 2013/14 group stage, the German club is yet to win at home this season. Furthermore, Aubameyang and Co. is winless in their last three home European games (D1, L2).
All in all, Dortmund has won only one of their last nine European games both home and away (D3, L5). In addition to that, the host is winless in their last six European games (D2, L4).
Although Dortmund has a superior head-to-head record over Tottenham, winning two of their three meetings (L1), their recent form doesn’t favor them to win. This could sadly be the end for Dortmund in this season’s Champions League.
