Today's UEFA EURO 2012 Group C match Italy-Serbia Qualifier was suspended after the sixth minute as the Serbian visiting fans turned on a display of chaos and hooliganism reminiscent of the football violence of the 80's.

The Serbians lit flares and threw them on the pitch as the Serbian players looked on in disbelief. The hooligans were seen cutting security nets, smashing glass, and destroying security barriers.

Scottish referee Craig Thomson was forced to suspend the match due to the escalating chaos in the visiting section.

UEFA will be awaiting match and witness reports by officials before considering opening a disciplinary case. Serbia could face a severe penalization, starting with automatic loss of three points for todays match. Other possibilities may include having to complete their qualification in empty stadiums away from home.
