De Copa Libertadores wordt algemeen beschouwd als de belangrijkste clubcompetitie in het Zuid-Amerikaanse voetbal. Net zoals in de UEFA Champions League strijden teams uit Zuid-Amerikaanse landen jaar na jaar om de prestigieuze titel.
Het formaat van deze competitie is sinds de start in 1960 veranderd. In de beginjaren mochten alleen de kampioenen van elke CONMEBOL-natie deelnemen, maar het toernooi is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot een evenement waarbij 38 teams aan de eigenlijke competitie deelnemen. In recente jaren hebben zelfs 47 teams meegedaan aan één editie van de Copa Libertadores, waarbij ook de teams die in de voorrondes zijn uitgeschakeld en de teams in de groepsfase worden meegerekend.
De groepsfase bestaat uit 32 teams, verdeeld over acht groepen. De groepswinnaars en nummers twee gaan door naar de knock-outfase, waarin over twee wedstrijden wordt bepaald welke teams de finale bereiken. Tot 2018 werd de finale in een thuis-en-uitwedstrijd gespeeld, maar de CONMEBOL heeft het Champions League-format overgenomen door een neutrale locatie voor de finale aan te wijzen.
Als de twee belangrijkste voetballanden in Amerika, hebben teams uit Argentinië en Brazilië het toernooi door de jaren heen gedomineerd. Samen hebben deze twee landen meer dan 45 Copa Libertadores-titels gewonnen. Teams zoals Boca Juniors, Flamengo, River Plate en Palmeiras hebben faam verworven door deze competitie meerdere keren te winnen.
Het verslag van de Copa Libertadores is wereldwijd beschikbaar. In de Verenigde Staten zijn de uitzendrechten toegekend aan beIN Sports, dat de competitie tot het einde van de editie van 2026 zal verslaan. Streamingplatforms zoals Fanatiz en fuboTV mogen ook alle inhoud met betrekking tot de competitie streamen tot 2026. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk kunnen fans deze competitie volgen via het streamingplatform Mola TV. In Canada hebben beIN Sports Canada en beIN Sports en Español ook overeenkomsten gesloten om de competitie tot 2026 te verslaan.
