Arsenal, after a rather disastrous UEFA Champions League outing, will look to make amends in the Premier League against Everton. The Gunners, following years of disastrous draw results, had been handed a somewhat easier opponent this season.
Barcelona, one of their usual opponents, was handed Manchester City while Bayern, the team which Arsenal drew in the past two seasons, drew Shakhtar. Unfortunately, after a good first ten minutes, Arsenal's old tendencies returned. Per Mertesacker inadvertently deflected a speculative shot into goal as Arsenal conceded the first. They conceded a second as they pressed forward for an equalizer.
Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain came on and scored late in the match; however, his mistake saw Monaco score a third. With three away goals to their name, Monaco is unlikely to throw the tie away; history is rarely on the side of the side which losses the first leg at home in the UEFA Champions League.
Everton, in the Europa League, had no such problems against Young Boys and are now set to face Dynamo Kiev in the Round of 16. However, in the Premier League, they are fourteenth, six points above the relegation zone. This is rare for a team of Everton's quality.
They have collected only one win in their previous six premier league fixtures, managing draws against Leicester and Liverpool recently. They will be without Tony Hibbert and Aiden McGeady for this one. As for Arsenal, they will be without Mikel Arteta, About Diaby, Mathieu Debuchy and Aaron Ramsey.
David Ospina, who made a superb save against Monaco, should continue to start in goal. Arsene Wenger will perhaps stick to Olivier Giroud up front, despite his string of misses in midweek in the Champions League.
