Preview: Merseyside Reds eying EPL Top Three position ahead of October
Sunderland are enduring an horrible start to their 2013/14 English Premier League campaign. With only one point from the a possible 20, the Black Cats are totally rooted at the bottom of the table. If they don’t start picking points, they may well wave goodbye to the competition come May next year.
However, with the sacking of Paulo Di Canio, the club’s board is expecting better results. The first of those came in the Capital One Cup in midweek when they made the most of Peterborough’s inferiority to triumph 2-0.
Liverpool had a much tougher opponent in the form of Manchester United and lost 1-0. With their Football League Cup adventure already over, the Merseyside Reds can invest more energy on achieving a good position in the Premier League. Their priority being the Top Four, Liverpool currently find themselves occupying the sixth place.
However, claiming three good points today could see them jump into second with 13 points like Tottenham Hotspur but two points behind EPL leaders Arsenal. They failed to win on any of their last two matches away to Sunderland – losing 1-0 in March 2012 and drawing 1-1 in September last year.
Brendan Rodgers and his men have played four matches this month and won only once; that was on the first day of September when they defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Anfield. Can Liverpool bounce back from their last three results and head into October on a high?
